  • Books About Terrible Rich People?

I've been reading a lot of Molly Keane lately, and that has led me to have something of an obsession with books about snobby rich people being awful to each-other. The problem is that I need more of such books to read. Can anyone recommend me some books about the cruel, vindictive, manipulative, preferably English or Irish upper class?

Please refrain from suggesting the Gossip Girl, A-List, Pretty Little Liars books, etc. I already know about those, and they're not quite what I want. =)

    Thanks a ton!

  • Some help with the Trapezoidal Rule, Please?

    When deriving a proof for a Trapezoidal Riemann Sum, you essentially just add the area of a trapezoid ad infinitum, then simplify. But the Trapezoid rule looks like this: A≃ (b-a)/2n [ f(x0 ) + 2 f(x1 ) + 2 f(x2 ) + ... + 2 f(xn-1 ) + f(xn ) ], and I don't understand where the multiplier of 2 comes from, when the proof looks like this:

    A≈h∙y_(0+ y_1 )/2+ h∙y_(1+ y_2 )/2+ …+h·y_(n-1+ y_n )/2

    A≈h(y_0/2+ y_1+y_2+ …+y_(n-1)+ y_n/2)

    A≈ h/2(y_0+ y_1+ y_2+⋯+y_(n-1)+y_n)

    A≈ (b-a)/2n(y_0+ y_1+ y_2+⋯+y_(n-1)+y_n)

    Can anybody explain?

    Thanks!

  • I'm looking for the name and artist of a painting?

Some time ago, I was at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and I saw two paintings that I cannot remember either their names or artists. The first was of a body, cut open, and crucified on the back of a tow truck.

The second was of a carnival scene with a number of members of clergy, specifically nuns, with their breasts showing.

I remember reading that the latter was painted by a woman, and the former by a man, and that they were good friends, or something like that.

    Thanks!

  • Help finding the name of an Animated movie, please?

when I was young, I saw an animated movie that I really liked, but I can no longer remember the name. I don't remember much, but what I do remember is this: a young girl (I believe usually wearing a blue dress) lives in big house full of animals, mostly dogs. There is also a white female cat, who's sort of snobby, and lives in a big room with stairs to get to her bed. At one point, there's a big spiral staircase. At one point, the girl has a birthday party, and all the dogs get her presents, but the presents are strange things that I think they found at a dump. When they present them to her, she doesn't really like them but assures them that "it's the thought that counts".

If you can help me, I'd be most grateful.

  • Why is it that modulus graphs, where y = f(|x|), are symmetrical around the y-intercept?

I can't really understand this, could someone explain?

    1 AnswerMathematics1 decade ago
  • Why does a modulus graph where "y = |f(x)| " not extend below the x-axis?

I've tried researching it, but I can't find any explanation. The best I can figure is that absolute values aren't negative, and since y is equal to an absolute value, it can't extend into the negative. But this doesn't seem reasonable, can anybody please explain?

  • Something is wrong with my iPod Touch?

Yesterday morning I tried to use the internet, but it didn't work. I could type in whatever site I wanted to go to, but it wouldn't load, and if I tried to click a link in, say, the history, it would light up to show it had been clicked, but nothing would happen. I know it's not a problem with my internet, because that's working fine. I hadn't done anything unusual with it, and everything else works.

What's wrong and how can I fix it?

  • What is the name of this song?

It's used in a commercial on The Movie Network for the HBO series True Blood. It starts off with a saxophone, and then a man sings; I can't make out the first bit, but the latter goes something like, "your hand in mine, I've lost control, of all that I know. I can't let you go." I tried searching the lyrics in Google, but I found nothing.

  • A Question about 'Les Soeurs Vatard' by Huysmans?

Ok, so I have the French edition of this book, and I'm trying to read it, but the first sentence is 'Deux heures du matin sonnerent.' (accent grave on the first e of sonnerent). Well anyway, to me this seems to say 'two hours of the morning rang.' But that makes no sense, so could someone please tell me what this is supposed to mean? Thanks.

  • What do you think of this?

I'm not much of a poet - I much prefer prose - but I was trying to display the trivialities of life.

    "The Week"

    Monday Afternoon

    work was slow

    I went home early

    and did nothing

    Tuesday Morning

    I looked in the mirror

    and saw a face

    but the face

    wasn't mine

    Mid-day Wednesday

    the waiter asked

    if I wanted pepper

    I said no

    Twilight, Thursday

    I saw a designer dress

    in a shop window

    I pictured it on myself

    but

    it didn't look as good

    Friday Night

    there was a party

    I wasn't invited

    but I went anyway

    Saturday

    I was sick

    Sunday Evening

    I spent the day alone

    no one called

  • Some Help with Eugenics?

I've been thinking about eugenics lately, but I can't quite seem to decide whether or not it's a good idea. I'm a libertarian, so I believe very strongly in personal liberty, but at the same time, I'd like to... reduce the population, considerably. The best way would be through eugenics, as in, those whose genes would negatively effect the gene pool should not reproduce. This would alleviate some of the unnecessary births. But there's something about eugenics that... somehow bothers me. More information and thoughtful, non-fallacious, non 'OMG Ur a Nazi' comments would be appreciated.

  • What's the Name of this Book?

The plot is pretty much that everybody has the same dream, which is that the world is going to end on a certain day, then the night before everybody has a good time, maybe with family, et cetera, then all the parents put their kids to sleep - forever - then the next day comes and nothing happens.

    What is this book?

  • Could somebody please give me some information about this?

Some time ago I was told of a way of determining whether or not a person was introverted or extraverted, it was to, when you first met them, reach your finger out to try to touch their nose. If they moved back, they were introverted, if they stayed where they were, they were extraverted. Disregard the fact that this is probably not the greatest nor psychologically sound personality assessment.

Could somebody please tell me a bit more about this?
