"In the age of information, ignorance is a choice." - Donny Miller Lover of music. I will be attending college in the next few years; I intend to pursue a major of either astronomy or astrophysics. Backup majors/minors include computer science, physics, climatology, meteorology, history (ancient preferably), and a bunch of other intriguing subjects I haven't delved quite deeply enough into just yet. I own a YouTube channel that consists of almost entirely progressive rock and metal songs. Fortunately, my musical taste is not confined to those two genres. I enjoy experimenting with all genres. • My G9x mouse moves erratically in some situations..?

    Hi there!

I just recently purchased a new computer, and along with it a brand new mouse - the G9x. Originally I had no problems with the mouse, but now I have noticed something extremely annoying. When I'm playing Black Ops 2, my mouse movement is regularly fine - no noticeable problems. However, when I go to turn my mouse quickly (as if someone is behind me) and my mouse moves too erratically for me to aim correctly.

I have tried changing my sensitivity - lower and higher - and even ensured that no mouse acceleration was enabled. The two possible issues could be my mousepad - which has worked fine in the past - or there's something wrong with the laser on the mouse.. or I'm just using it incorrectly.

    Any help whatsoever is appreciated.

  • How do I get an Internet connection on two desktops?

    Hi everyone.

I'm a newbie when it comes to Internet connections, Wi-Fi and whatnot.

My current setup is: 2 desktops, 1 modem, 1 router; desktops relatively close together; router is not wireless, but runs on a cord attached to the modem which is attached to the other desktop..

My future setup is: 2 desktops, FAR away from each other

My question is.. how exactly do I setup an Internet connection on both PCs? My ISP of choice is Comcast. I've been told that having a modem/router connected to one PC with an ethernet cable (strong connection) and a wi-fi adaptor connected to another PC (weaker connection) is the way to go.

I also would enjoy having a connection joinable from outside devices such as an iPod/iPad.

  • Customizing a Gaming PC..?

Hi there. I'm customizing (not building; I don't have the means to right now) a gaming PC (primary use) on CyberPowerPC. I need some assistance, as, even after researching thoroughly, I still understand very little about several components of a gaming PC.

First off, here's my current build:

    http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1F7W78

    Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4670K 3.40 GHz

Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Intel Z87 Chipset DDR3

    Memory: 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz

Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB 16X PCIe 3.0

    SSD: 240GB Corsair Neutron GTX

    HDD: 2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III

Just wondering if there's anything I missed in terms of upgrading significantly for a cheap price or something that I can downgrade on for significant savings.. or if there's just a better build out there.

  • Are online backup services useful for one-time transfers?

    Alright, well, here's the situation:

I'm getting a new computer soon. I've used the computer I currently have for four years, and thus it possesses a lot of the data that I've accumulated since then (500GB+ music, 50GB+ movies, 50GB+ games). Therefore, I intend to use either an ONLINE BACKUP SERVICE or an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE for a one-time transfer from my old computer to my new computer.

So, my question is: do online backup services provide such a service? Am I allowed to do that? It clearly costs less (assuming a one-month subscription), but I'm unsure of the reliability in comparison to an external hard drive.

    Any input is appreciated.

  • What do you prog-metallers think of Leprous' new album?

I had been avoiding Leprous since their debut because of the harsh vocals. I simply do not like them. However, 'Coal' has given me a new appreciation for Leprous' work and I really do enjoy the album.

What is your favorite song off the album? I like 'The Valley'.

  • What do you think of these modern rock artists reminiscent of classic rock bands?

I've been seeing a lot of questions lately (trolls, mainly) regarding the current state of modern music, and its apparent grotesqueness. Well, many of those who believe this are living in the past, where classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and Pink Floyd, However, none of these artists are producing music anymore, but their legacy has inspired the youth of today, and subsequently some fantastic music often overlooked by classic rock lovers.

  • When was the last time you came across a band that absolutely blew your mind?

    I actually have two!

I've been getting into the modern psychedelic rock/jam scene lately, and have discovered quite a bit of music that I would have overlooked if I was not a progressive rock fan. ;) So, I discovered a band called 'Earthless' and they produce some of the most mind-blowing jams I've ever heard. Another band that would be slightly below Earthless' level, but nonetheless still mind-blowingly awesome, are 'The Spacious Mind'. They both produce amazingly long jams and they're simply spectacular.

  • R&P: What is a group that you used to despise but now thoroughly enjoy?

As an avid progressive rock collector, I was recommended Porcupine Tree on numerous occasions. Nobody could ever sway me to enjoy their work, however. I was simply against the idea of liking Porcupine Tree, despite their position as "one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time". I believe it was the melancholy of their songs.

And then one day my good friend Soshanna introduced me to a song I had not yet heard before by Porcupine Tree - I believe it was 'Wedding Nails' - and I loved it; as a result, I began looking through more and more material by them. Eventually I found that I enjoy A LOT of their live material (almost all of it) and a good chunk of studio albums. I now consider Porcupine Tree one of my favorite modern progressive rock bands (wouldn't call them 'favorite prog rock bands of all time' quite yet, but maybe they'll get there someday1).

So, R&P, what is a group that you used to despise but now thoroughly enjoy?

  • What is your favorite band and how were you first introduced to them?

My favorite band is Pink Floyd.

My father showed me 'Dark Side of the Moon' when I was approximately 11, and wasn't too interested at the time. I went back when a few weeks later and found 'Animals' and somehow that struck me more than DSotM. Well, now that I'm 17 and Pink Floyd's my favorite band I am in love with the two albums and much of their material.

My experience was not as intriguing as I hope some of yours are.

  • Fans of progressive metal, what do you think of the band..?

    ..Speaking to Stones?

Apparently the band formed in 2004 to release their first, self-titled album in 2006. Since then, they've released only one album, entitled "Elements", in 2012. This is how I came into contact with Speaking to Stones. I'm glad I can say that the hours I've spent with Speaking to Stones have not been for naught.

Both of their albums are filled with Dream Theater influence, but thankfully their vocalist possesses more skill than Mr. LaBrie. Only an opinion..... ;) Luckily they appear to have retained the wonderfully technical musical aspects of Dream Theater, and developed them into their own, awesome form of progressive metal.

    "Fire"

I need some music to match seven different fields of a project I have coming up.

    d) enjoyable; fun (vague.. do whatever)

    e) other

  • What are some songs that, right off the bat, make you go.. "Yup. This is awesome."..?

Songs with epic openings, I suppose, would be what we're looking for here.. but not only that, the rest of the song should continue to be awesome. So.. epic songs that start off epically. There we go.

Iron Maiden - "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIzUTgtZ9_Q

Black Sabbath - "Heaven and Hell"

Ted Nugent & the Amboy Dukes - "The Great White Buffalo"

Robin Trower - "Day of the Eagle"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D175jn-3_M

Just shuffled my library and listened to the first 15 to see what kinds of songs I could get; worked out pretty well, I think.

What songs like these do you guys have? ;)

BQ: What is your favorite song that starts off weak as hell, then builds up into a fantastic frenzy of ferocious epicness?! [I messed up the f thing I had goin'..]

  • I require ideas for a biological (organelle) carnival game.?

This game should properly identify the functions and structure of the CHLOROPLASTS of a cell. This carnival game should be playable by peers.

The ideas I have currently may or may not be good, but I'd like some opinions on them.

    ¥ Ring Toss

We set up a few green bottles to act as the "stands" to hold up the stuff within the chloroplast; the "rings" will be green, simulating the ring-like structures within the chloroplast.

I'm not sure how to illustrate the function of the chloroplast with this game.

    ¥ Into the Pumpkin

We thaw out a pumpkin, which simulates a chloroplast's outer membrane. We have our peers throw items (green) into the pumpkin to simulate the internal structure of the chloroplast. Once again, I'm unsure on how to properly illustrate the chloroplast's function within this game.

Perhaps someone on Y!A will be of help.

Otherwise, this question, and myself, will be lonely.

  • I require assistance choosing a major for college.. and perhaps even a college to match.?

Hey there, Yahooians. My name's Troy. I'm a senior in high school this year and am beginning my applications to college! However.. I have to find the colleges that I want to apply to first.

Before I continue, I'd like to list the majors I'm currently interested in. These are mainly broad subjects, and thus I'd like your assistance finding more specific majors in each of the subjects.. and perhaps even point me in the right directions in terms of "this is NOT the major for you".

    * Astronomy * Astrophysics * Physics

These are the majors I started off looking at, as I'm extremely intrigued by space - and thus, astronomy; the other two are.. well, astrophysics is basically a combination of astronomy and physics, while a strong-suit in physics is required for astronomy. I've had my heart set on astronomy for quite a while now; I've quite the intellectual mind, if I may say so myself. A science seems to be the perfect fit.

Other majors I was observing. Note: these are relatively broad, as no specific major intrigued me more than others.

    * English * Earth and Planetary Sciences * Philosophy * Psychology

I understand that psychology tends to be a popular major/minor, and, of course, I'm also quite intrigued by the scientific study of the human mind. As for philosophy, as the word implies, I've a thirst, or love, for knowledge. English.. I've always been an acceptable writer, understood English very well.. I love learning about English.. of course, what I'm writing now isn't 100% grammatically correct, but I tend to love being in English class. Earth and Planetary Sciences.. same as astronomy, I guess, with a bit of superfluous interest in geology and meteorology.

Well, there's a list of subjects/majors I'm interested in. Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction as I continue.

I love science. I love mathematics. I love history. I love English. It's who I am: I love learning. I went through a rough time as a freshman and sophomore, and thus my GPA suffered - luckily not heavily enough to completely ruin my chances in a good college. My current GPA is a 3.48 - basically a 3.5. I'm almost positive I can raise this to a 3.6-3.8 this year. I scored a 1900 on my SAT - afterwards, I decided that the colleges I was looking at do NOT require a "superscore" of 2100+ on the SATs, so I haven't - and don't plan on - retaking them.

    ************** TL;DR ****************

My apologies for the 'wall of text', as trolls would put it: tl;dr. Anyway, here's the tl;dr version: I need some help with some information regarding each of the above subjects/majors and possible specific majors within each of them that YOU think would be a good fit for me. [Subjects: Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, English, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Philosophy, Psychology] I'd also like some assistance with colleges: I live in New Jersey and am looking for colleges in my area: Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, etc.

-- If you managed to read all of that, congratulations and thank you for your time. Hopefully you can assist me with my future. If nobody decides to respond to this.. then, hm.. I suppose I'd have to show my guidance counselor this question. Hoho.
