  • My laptop won't recognise any new USB devices?

Recently I bought a new external hard drive - an identical model to one I already own - but my laptop wont recognise when it's connected. I wasn't sure if the hard drive was broken, but a couple of days ago I bought a USB flash drive, and same problem. I've also tried the external hard drive on a friends laptop, and it works fine, so it's a problem with the laptop rather than with the peripherals.

However, the laptop DOES still recognise all my old USB devices (flash drives, hard drives, phones, ipods etc), it's only new devices that it wont recognise.

It DOES still make that blingy sound when you connect one of the new devices, but that's all, it wont come up either in my computer, or disk management.

I'm tempted to get a new windows disk and just wipe the thing and start from scratch, but before I do something so drastic, I wanted to see if there was an easier option

thanks in advance for any help :)

  • 600cc restricted, or 250cc?

im thinking about getting my first bike, so i have a choice between a 250cc, or a 600cc that is restricted. I'm going to be on motorways for 250-300 miles regularly (every 1-2 weeks), and i have been told that i'd be crazy to get a 250, and that i'd have much more power on a restricted 600. I don't know enough about bikes to know if that's right or not, can anyone confirm that for me, and/or explain the difference between the two?

    cheers :)

  • Filling holes in bathroom tiles?

I just replaced the riser rail in our electric shower, but the fittings were slightly different, so now I have 2 bare holes in the tiles. Should I be concerned about moisture getting into the wall, and if so what's the best way to fill these holes? Would polyfilla be enough?

  • noob tips for skyrim?

i just got skyrim, but ive never played any elder scrolls game before this one, and im kinda lost cos its such a huge game.

has anyone got any tips on how to start off?

for instance, i play GTA games, and i know that in those, you want to find weapons hidden near save points, do side missions to increase health and armour, get extra money by doing taxi missions, that kind of thing.

Are there similar things you can do in skyrim that give you a bit of a head start? better than just playing through the main quest anyway..

also, whats worth picking up? at the moment im using a kinda general rule of 1:10 weight:value ratio to justify picking it up. also im collecting books cos i dont know which ones i'll need - help?

    thanks :)

  • is the old PS3 a good BluRay player?

I recently picked up a second hand PS3, mostly for it's BluRay capabilities (i already have an xbox360, and whilst i think the PS3 is probably a better console, I'm not going to go out and re-buy all my games on a 2nd platform).

Then i bought a new TV, and got a free blu ray player with it. This one is a Panasonic DMP-BD75 (the PS3 is the old one, not slim, i'm not sure what GB, but it's probably got a pretty small HDD).

So my question is, which one should i keep? I dont need 2 blu ray players, and im probably ONLY going to use the PS3 as a blu ray player, so which is the best one to keep for playing blu ray?

I know when the PS3 came out it was considered to be one of the best BD players on the market, is this still true? and how does it compare to the panasonic BD player i have?

    cheers guys

  • Good, fairly professional site for photographers' portfolio?

I know the most professional option would be my own website, but I'm not quite there yet.

Facebook is no good as topless pictures ( even arty ones) are usually removed. I have a DeviantArt page, but I dont know if it's a very professional option. Maybe flikr or something?

I also have a modelmayhem account: http://www.modelmayhem.com/1052914 . Feel free to have a look at the link to see my current level (amateur at best lol). I have quite a few more shoots to upload, but I've been waiting for somewhere else to display them. Or would MM be as good as I'm goin to get?

Thanks everyone, would be interested to hear where you all display your shots online

    Appreciated!

  • why won't my printer print?

I have a HP deskjet F2280, one of those scanner/copier/printer combos, and for some reason it just wont print. it was working fine last time i used it, i know it has full ink, and the copier is working.

it seems to be that the command to print isn't getting from the computer to the printer.

I've tried printing a test page, that's not doing anything either. I can't find a troubleshoot option - and im not sure it'd help anyway, cos the computer doesnt seem to realise there is anything wrong with the printer. I've tried the USB cable in different USB ports that i know for sure are working, so THAT's not the problem, and i've tried a different USB cable.

i just dont understand it, it's like the two jut aren't communicating

    any ideas? im completely stuck!

  • good place to live in new york?

I'm applying for a job in new york - i've never been there before (im english, living in ireland) and im just wondering how much accomodation will cost, if i managed to get the job.

the job is in the middle of manhattan, just by grand central station, but i dont care where i'd live, i'd rather commute than spend a fortune on an apartment in manhattan

i'd be looking for a 2 bed apartment, small would be fine to start with, the most important thing would be a family-oreintated area, as we have a 2 year old, we dont want to be in a rough area.

I'd heard queens would be suitable, but i'd like to hear from NY natives for your opinion

i would have max around $400 per week for rent, but ideally, i'd like to be spending more like $200. Is it possible to find somewhere for that amount? and where would you suggest?

    thanks :)

  • how do you work a night storage heater?

I want to have my storgae heaters on a night-time only - so they ONLY use the storage function, and dont waste electricity during the day (i have a dual meter - one of the ones with both a day and a night reading)

    http://tinypic.com/r/i1ffav/7

This is the switch for 'boost' - it only works when the right-hand switch (on the other picture) is on

    http://tinypic.com/r/15ucjl/7

switch on right has to be on for 'boost' (day time heating), does this mean that only the switch on the right should be on for night storage heating? or do both have to be on?

    cheers guys

  • Which telephoto zoom lesnse should i buy for my canon dslr?

I dont have much choice locally - i live in a fairly small town.

my options are 75-300 canon III (€308)

    or

    70-300 sigma (for canon) (€250)

    or

    canon 55-250 IS (€284)

to me, the obvious choice would be the sigma - much cheaper, and slightly larger zoom range.

is that right, or am i missing something?

    cheers

  • Base length of an isosceles triangle?

If I have an isosceles triangle where all we know is that the 2 equal sides are 1000 (miles), and the vertex angle is 1degree, what is the length of the base? I think the other 2 angles would have to be 89.5 each right? But I can't remember the formula for working out the base. As well as the answer, if u could give the formula, that'd be great!! Cos it's really annoying me that I cant remember how to do this :S

  • what's the best way to shoot a full moon in a cloudy sky?

i tried a few different methods with a dslr but couldnt get it quite right.

with a low ISO speed and a long exposure the clouds (though moving VERY slowly) were moving enough to blur.

i got better results with a higher ISO and shorter exposure, but at a high ISO speed, whatever combination of aperture and exposure i tired, i had the same problem - if the clouds were bright enough, the moon was too bright. If the moon was right, the clouds were too dark.

i've seen this shot done right before, i just cant figure it out

    any help would be appreciated!

(if it helps any im using a canon500D - you americans call it the rebel something or other, i think, with a 55mm focal length - i dont have anything longer at the moment)

  • Grand theft auto (GTA) san andreas xbox 360 super bunny hop glitch?

i'm a veteran of San andreas on the PS2, but i recently downloaded the xbox version from live, for my xbox 360.

On the PS2, there was a glitch where if you hold down the bunny hop button (it was either L1 or R1 as i remember), then, as you release that button, quickly press the shoot button (O), you could bunny hop much higher - like 5 times as high as a regular bunnyhop.

I can't find this glitch on the xbox360. does anyone know if it exists? and if so which buttons it is? i tried bunnyhop (B) followed by shoot (i think LB?), but it didnt work.

    can anyone help?

This ISN'T the bunny hop CHEAT - the one where you press about 15 buttons in a row, then are permanently able to 'super bunny hop'

    cheers

  • is the Canon battery grip for EOS 500D camera good value?

The battery grip costs (where i live) around €180. The regular battery costs around €55.

So the battery grip should have at least 3 times the life of the regular battery to be worth buying.

Who has used this product? does anyone know if it's good value?

    thanks guys

  • Does namco light gun for playstation work with PS2?

It's the 1996 classic one for playstation 1. The connector is obviously the right one, but it has an extra bit, looks like it connects to the yellow tv wire? Just dont want to bother buying a game if it's not gonna work. Inb4 retro- I'm having a nostalgia trip after finding it in Oxfam!

  • Which DSLR camera lenses should i buy?

I'm looking to buy a DSLR, but i have no idea what lenses i need. they all come with an 18-55, some also come with a 55-200, which i believe has a decent zoom. I like a good zoom, but at the same time i'm not good spend stupid money on a massive telephoto lense just for the hell of it.

if seeing what kind of stuff i shoot would help, check out the following links:

    http://khayman82.deviantart.com/gallery/

    http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/1052914/viewa... http://www.bigstockphoto.com/profile/afterglow82

basically i'll be shooting more of the same, with maybe a little more of an emphasis on modelling and portraits.

There's also a possibility that i will, at some point, get into wedding photography - but i have the impression i'm going to need a lot more equipment than an entry level DSLR and an 18-55mm lense for that...

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated =D
