A book I read a long time ago...?
I can't remember the title of it. I'm know that it was a series about a girl who became a model after she was discovered in a department store. I think that the name of the series was her name. I don't remember very much about the actual plot of the story but I do remember that there was one part where she was at a photoshoot for jeans and everyone took a break to smoke except for her because she didn't smoke and so she took a taxi home and had to go into her apartment building to get her mom's emergency credit card to pay the taxi driver.
I know that the stuff I remember is a little random but any help would be very much appreciated!
2 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoCulture of Costa Rica?
I am going on a mission trip to Costa Rica this summer and was wondering about the culture there. Specifically about the family life. What are the roles of each individual family member? How do the differ from the roles of family members in The US?
Also, how are sandals viewed? Are they acceptable for everyone? Or do feet need to be covered?
I know that shorts are not accepted for men, but is it okay if girls wear them?
Thanks a lot for any help!
3 AnswersCosta Rica1 decade agoIf you could only save 10 books...?
...what books would you save?
My modern American literature class just read the book Farenheit 451 and we were assigned the task of chosing 10 books that we would save if we could only save 10.
Here is my list:
1. The Bible
2. The Illiad and the Odyssey by Homer
3. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
4. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
5. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin
6. The Complete Works of Dr. Seuss
7. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
8. A Collection of Fairytales by Hans Christian Anderson
9. Pretties by Scott Westerfeld
10.A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
we then had to defend our choices and eventually our 240 books were narrowed down to a total of 10.
11 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoCould someone please critique my poem?
this is a 'scary' poem that I had to write for my Creative Writing class. It is supposed to be about something that you are afraid of, I happen to be terrified that my house is going to catch on fire. The poem must be over 20 lines and has to have a moral. I would like to know if the poem sounds right to you and also what you think the moral might be. Any suggestions or improvements are welcome. Feel free to rip it apart. Thank you very much!
I awoke to the acrid taste of flames
And jolt out of bed
I save what I can as I escape
Through a downstairs window.
Into the safety of damp the night air.
From outside I watch,
Eyes stinging from smoke and unshed tears,
As my house succumbs to the hungry flames.
Helpless as a child, I observe the disaster.
There is nothing I can do.
My ears ring,
Echoing the calls of phantom sirens
That pierce through the silent night
As they approach.
Not fast enough
I slowly become aware of others around me.
They, too, watch as the building is destroyed.
Some hold each other, seeking comfort
From the pain of loss
Which causes every heart to break.
My mouth is dry from the ash
That hangs in the air like a bitter cloud
And my tongue seems too heavy to move.
But move I must.
And move I do.
Like a vagabond I will go,
Bringing nothing, taking nothing,
Having nothing but a name
And memories.
A chance to reinvent
Who I am
Who I want to be.
An opportunity
To start anew.

During your freshman year of high school you find out that your mother is pregnant again. They say that you will be able to name the baby. You name your new little sister __________ __________.
After you're little sister is born, you realize just how much work a baby is and swear not to have one until you have been married for many years. Unfortunately, this does not work out so well and you become pregnant during your senior year of college. You give the baby your mother's maiden name as her middle name and name her _________ ____________.
You and your boyfriend later get married and find out that you will be having twins. The ultrasound shows that it will be two boys. You name them _________ _______ and _________ ________.
Three years later, you try for one more baby. Your second daughter is born 3 months prematurely and has to fight for survival. You name her after the strongest person you know to give her hope. Your daughter's name is ______ ___________.
Thankfully she survives, but has suffered minor brain damage. you learn a lot from her as she grows and eight years later you decide to adopt a child with autism. There is an opportunity to adopt an autistic child from Korea and you jump on it. You give the boy an American first name but a Korean middle name. His name is ________ ____________.

Grab the nearest book. Do not look around for your favorite, just take the closest book you can find and open it. Write down the third line of the seventh paragraph on that page. If there are not seven paragraphs on the page then take the third line from the last paragraph on the page. Do not finish the sentence if it continues from there. Then write what book and page it came from.

I am looking for some new books to read and would like to know what your favorites are. I mostly read young adult fiction or science fiction but I am open to everything.
My top Ten favorite books in no particular order are:
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
It was on Fire when I Lay Down on It by Robert Fulghum
Extras by Scott Westerfeld
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling
Tithe by Holly Black
Other book suggestions that you think I might like are welcome as well.
If you must use one of the Twilight books in your list of favorites, please do not use all four of them, it would be preferable if you did not use any of them but if you have to please keep it to a maximum of two or just say the Twilight series.
Thank you :]

2 AnswersOther - Television1 decade agoSpanish conversation; I've already edited it myself but could someone else double check my work?
I'm a little worried that I may have missed something important grammatically and every error is a point off, there are only ten points in this assignment so it's very important that it is at least mostly correct. I have already corrected some of the mistakes that the teacher pointed out and some that I caught myself but I would like another opinion. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Here's what I have written:
Guillermo: ¿Eres de Valencia?
Ada María: No, no soy de aquí. Estoy de vacaciones. Vivo en Salamanca.
Guillermo: Tengo una hermana major que vive en Salamanca. Ella es enfermera. Ella trabaja en la hospital de niños.
Ada María: Conozco una enfermera que trabaja en ese hospital. ¿Es tú hermana alta con pelo castaño y con un lunar en la mejilla?
Guillermo: ¡sí! ¿Conoces a mi hermana? Su nombre es Marta Vera.
Ada María: ¡Claro! Marta Vera es mi major amiga.
Guillermo: Que gran coincidencia. ¡El mundo es un pañuelo!

I know that this is in the wrong section, but only people who have read the Harry Potter books would understand what I'm talking about. Has anyone else noticed how much Harry Potter is referenced in the Disney Chanel show Hannah Montana? I don't watch the show often but it seems that on every episode I've seen they say something about Harry Potter, usually indirrectly but still. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed

2 AnswersMusic & Music Players1 decade agoWhat is your favorite teen romance book?
I'm looking for some good books to read in this genre and was wondering what some favorites are. I have read the Twilight series already and while other books like those would be okay, I am kind of trying to escape the vampire theme at the moment so something else would be greatly appreciated. I love Jane Austin and Nicolas Sparks books. I'm pretty open to reading anything. I prefer longer books but short books with a good plot are good as well.
Sorry this question got to be so long. That always seems to happen. I'll try to get better at that so people will actually be able to answer my question instead of spending 15 minutes reading it.
any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks:D
