  • FAFSA Dependency Override?

I know this has been asked time and time again, yet I'm hopeful someone who has been in my position or a professional will chime in.

I know that the FAFSA application has a set of circumstances for independent status, no need to reiterate those. My question pertains to the unusual circumstances for a dependency override, here are my brief details, I of course will provide documentation where I can and write more eloquently when I do submit my papers.

I have no contact with my biological father.

Mother died when I was 8.

Shortly before death, she and my adoptive father got divorced.

Father remarried- this is the only important part really.

Once my father remarried I left the house due to his wife, not because I simply did not like her, no.

I left due to emotional abuse on my part and her physical abuse to my father.

A great example of her insanity: As soon as they married all photos of me were gone, my parents wedding album and video were burned. Which, doesn't sound like much but when one parent is deceased it really does hurt.

They would fight about everything, often she would bring up my mother, spewing vicious things about her and claiming that I am not really his daughter and I don't deserve to have their name.

On top of that she has threatened suicide, beat my father with a wooden hiking stick and threatened that if he ever calls the police that she will take him with her.

That's the highlight reel, after this I moved into my grandmother's house, she is retired and I work to support myself and pay her rent.

I literally cannot get information from them if I tried, it's a dangerous household and the one time my grandmother tried to get paperwork my father's wife tried to hit her and we haven't tried since. I myself have not spoken to them in years and I can't, his wife won't let him have a cell phone and threatens us when we try to get any information, claiming, "He doesn't have to provide that, you don't deserve it."

If you haven't gotten it yet, she's a piece of work.

I know I'm leaving some stuff out, her history of slander toward my family and myself is too much to get into. Anyways, so far I have my own letter, my sister has written me one, I have one from my aunt (father's sister) who has knowledge of the situation, my grandmother who knows first hand what is going on and my therapist.

I do not have police documents, as I stated before, I don't contact them and the one time we mentioned the police the officer said there would be no case because it is the woman being abusive and the judge wouldn't do anything. I'm afraid of police involvement, she has stated that she has planted drugs in the house and if he calls the police that they will get him charged with it since he alone owns the house.

So, anybody who has been here, what should/can I do? More letters? Gather any evidence?

    Please help.

  • Can I get Pell Grant?

Prior to this yearI didn't file my FAFSA. My parent's income was like 60,000 or so and I was the only dependent. Well, dependent in FAFSA's eyes at least, despite not living with them and paying my tuition. So there was no point to file it.

Now only my dad works. Still making like 60k. I'm in college, step kid is in high school my dad's wife doesn't work and her mom moved in and she also does not work. I do, but I make 8k a year. Tuition is $4,000 a semester.

So there are 5 people in the 'household'. One in college and the others are also dependents with no jobs and my dad supports them. Does that change anything? What would be the best way to approach my FAFSA to see if I can get Pell.

I doubt I can but you never know, with 4 dependents and 8k in tuition for one 60k doesn't go far after house payments and such.

Please no mean or sarcastic answers. I'm trying to save money, grad school will be expensive enough. Gotta save where I can!

    Perhaps I should get married....HA.

  • Should I go to the Dean about my professor?

I'm currently in the middle of a 3000 level major class, so I need a good grade in it for grad school. Our midterm was a research paper based on observation. Professors usually have our midterm grades in before that last day to drop the class before academic penalty so you know where you stand after your midterm and can determine if you should drop or not. Well, our professor did not. In fact we received our grades a week after. However, the part that I want to complain about is: Two full weeks after we turned our papers in our prof informed us that any website does not count as a source. They also said that is what most people lost points on. Here's the awesome part, in the grading criteria there is no mention of what sources are ok to use or not. It says "professional" sources only. Now, to clarify I asked a couple people in class and they too had used mostly web pages as well and we didn't use random sites either. Every web page I cited was either a government page, nationally recognized organizations and national healthcare type things such as the CDC or American Red Cross?

I received a C, even though I had enough sources, in text citation and I did what was asked. I'm sure I made mistakes but not 21+ points worth. I feel that if they would've stated that websites weren't ok then half the class wouldn't miss it. Can they grade you one something you didn't know about? Even if the grading criteria clearly never mention it?

Should I or could I do something about this?

  • Any advice on a drawing tablet for Photoshop?

I'm looking into a tablet for my spouse, for use with Photoshop CS4 and CS5. I'm wondering if anybody has one or has had one and if it is worth it. I'm looking mainly at the Wacom Bamboo line. I can't drop $200 but $100 or less if possible is great. I wouldn't mind looking into a slightly used one as well. They are an art major in college and Photoshop has been giving them some trouble lately. Hoping this might help for projects. They aren't a pro but they need to use a lot of Adobe apps for assignments. Something mid-range would be great. Or should I go used and get the higher end model?

    Also.

We have 3 macs, one runs Snow Leopard and the other two run Lion. Do the tablets work alright with Lion?

This is for a Christmas gift, any other suggestions for gifts will be helpful too. Thanks in advance!

  • A couple Xbox Live questions?

Alright, everytime I try to redeem a MS points card it says it isn't valid. I buy them at Target/Walmart and it doesn't work. It's happened twice. My account says I'm in Canada but I'm in the US now and it won't let me change it. Is that the problem? Because it lets me redeem XBL subscription codes just fine. Any help? Or can I just buy them online?

Second. I bought a 12 month subscription for myself in December '10 and online it says it expires in July '11. What's up with that? I'm no mathematician but that just doesn't seem correct.

Do subscriptions expire? Because I bought one of the $50 ones before they ran out and I had to buy the $60 card. Should I call customer service?

  • Community service hours and court question?

I got a speeding ticket in November, court ordered community service in December to be completed mid February. Besides it maybe having an affect on my hopes of becoming an officer I have a quick question.

I have all of my hours lined up to be completed before my court date, actually 2 weeks earlier than the court date. Yesterday I was diagnosed with Mono. I still have 3 days to finish for my community service and I'm going to have to miss two of them and I will not the opportunity to finish them before court. I work during the week as well and the place where I go isn't open on weekends. I just would like to know if I show up at court with two days left to complete what will happen? Should I provide documentation from my doctor proving my diagnosis?

  • Career in law enforcement, help?

I'm 20 years old (21 in July) and I'm interested in becoming a police officer. I have my high school diploma and I'm currently a criminal justice major at my university. I'm a sophomore in school and I'm about to get into the major specific courses. I know that I will have to work my way up the ladder in this career and I was just looking for some tips on how to get started.

I've only had one speeding ticket, if that will affect my chances please let me know.

I've never been convicted of a felony or anything of that sort. I volunteer and I've never been in contact with any illegal substances.

I just want to help and protect people and provide for a family when I have one.

Any help from current officers or past officers is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

  • Choosing an ice hockey stick, any help?

I'm 5'4" and female. I can ice skate and recently I've wanted to try hockey but figuring out all the equipment is a bit overwhelming. I have skates and the next thing I want to add is a stick so I can practice at home. On a skill pad, not concrete or asphalt. I've heard I should get one with a lower flex. Should I go for a senior stick? Or perhaps an intermediate?

I know it is in my best interest to go to a hockey shop and check it out beforehand but I drive an hour just to ice skate and that's the closest shop around here so I can't keep driving back and forth trying out random sticks. Which brings me to my next question, can you guys give me a couple suggestions to look for when I do mosey over to a hockey shop? I'd like to keep it under $150 since I don't exactly know what I'm doing yet. But I don't want something that will break quickly.

    All help is appreciated. :D

Id be up there going to school, so that would have an effect on my decision.

but for anyone who lives there, what are some good things and bad things about each place?

    like, price of living.

    weather.

    everyday life....etc.

    please help.
