wood deteriorates pretty rapidly when exposed to the elements. covering the bridge extended it's life considerably. the cover kept ice from collecting on the bridge which made travel safer for travellers. it was also a place to stop under cover if a downpour came.

Good question. In today's world, covered bridges don't make sense, because bridges are built with weather-resistant material, but when bridges were built of wood, the deck of the covered bridge lasted longer because it was kept dry and didn't rot as an exposed deck would have.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

The reason to cover these bridges was simple: less exposure to the elements meant the wooden superstructures would last longer.
