Christians - Who else would do this?

This is a true story in the news recently about a man who cut off his hand and microwaved it because he found a mark of sin on his hand. here is the full story :

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080110/ap_on_fe_st/mi...

My question is who else would do this to themselves because of a skin blemish? Shouldn't all Christians do things this extreme if it is in the holy books? And why was he taken to a mental hospital for practising his religion and taking the actions his religion requires..

I am neither Christian nor Atheist, I am just curious as to the mindset regarding this topic.

Update:

I am not saying he is or is not mentally ill, i am just looking for other opinions on it.

also, i have noticed that at anytime when someone says God spoke to them they are immediately deemed insane

The phrase, "If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell" has been in the Bible for a couple thousand years, yet there is not ONE recorded instance of a Believer mistaking the hyperbole as literal instruction. My "take" is that the man was/is in dire need of psychiatic care - and a good teacher to help him realize that taking two seperate passages of the Bible, dealing with seperate subjects and blending them together is never a good idea.

The emergency responders to this poor young man found no mark on the hand - but it was pretty well destroyed by the micro-wave. There are two possibilities here, 1: he genuinely believed he was following god's law, or 2: he was having an insane moment. I tend to think it was #2, and that society has the responsibility of protecting him from himself until a definite diagnosis is made.

If your premise is correct, people who kill themselves in the name of religion are doing the right thing too.

I think the guy may have been on drugs, but I don't know. He definitely was suffering from a psychotic break of some kind.

At least he had the forethought to put the hand in the microwave AFTER he cut it off.

Some people watch gruesome murder movies, and go out and decide to commit murder in the same way depicted in the movie, because they are evil, or "mentally off balance" Other people watch the movie, and understand that it is just a movie, and they have no evil intent in their hearts, and their minds don't tell them to, so they do not go out and murder anyone. The same thing can happen when reading the Bible, or any other book, for that matter. If someone who's mind is not right reads it, they can interpret it the way their evilness, or unstableness sees it, and they can go out and do something horrible, like this man who cut off his hand.

So, in response to your question, the "mindset" would be a very troubled, confused mindset that would cause someone to do this, not because he was a Christian, and thought it was the "right thing to do." He grossly misinterpreted what he read.

Revelations also talks about a 7 headed dragon with 10 horns. People with mental problems don't understand what a metaphor is, so they may actually take something literally that isn't supposed to be taken literally.

People who say that God spoke to them now are most likely mentally ill, since God is not doing miracles for now. (We have the signs of the presence in Matthew 24, for example, but a sign and some one claiming to have a conversation with God is quite different.)

Did it ever occur to you that the poor man was mentally ill. It isn't religion but mental illness that made him do that. Why not get hold of your political leaders and ask why they cut mental health care first, when ever they need to make a budget cut. Look at how many homeless people are in need of treatment! It doesn't matter if they talk to God, Satan, aliens or the dog next door, they need to receive health care!

That kind of stuff isn't in the Bible at all. The Mark of the Beast will be something EVERYONE will be required to sport in order to buy or sell, and the true Christians will be all "no way man" and then be hunted down by the anti-Christ, but God will show them favor.

This guy is stupid. He wasn't listening to God, he was probably listening to one of Satan's minions. It's just my opinion, though.

Source(s): I'm a Christian and would not cut off my hand. Sheesh.

Ya know, I saw that just yesterday. I have foxnews.com as my homepage, anyway some people take things in the bible as literal. All that scripture means is, just as hard as it would be for you to cut off your hand, that's how hard it would be to Stop doing whatever it is that's causing you to stumble. That's all, poor thing I feel sorry for him, he does need help. I really don't understand the microwave part though because the bible said to throw it away from you, not cook it. Still it isn't meant to be taken literally.

Mental illness is found in all religions. In this case the poor thing is a religious fanatic. It's too bad he did not get psychiatric help before this happened.

The mark of sin in your hand isn't a physical blemish, but the actions you take with your hands. the mark of the beast in in you hand and in your forehead. Your thoughts and actions. The man who did that to himself clearly has some mental issues.

That man is foolish and uniformed as to what The Mark of the Beast is, He obviously does not know that he must first allow the mark and permit it, What he has was simply uniformed, It clearly states the he must receive tha mark, he did not.

and now..He mast pay the price for that ignorance
