Is it common to fail a squat two weeks before a powerlifting competition?

My husband is getting nervous because he has just attempted 220kg for 2 reps and failed. He lifted 220kg in a comp a couple months ago and is hoping to improve but is concerned about recent training sessions. Any thoughts as to what will happen on the day?

It isn't bad, all he needs is a few days off, from squatting at least, he is pushing too hard. I know this might sound crazy, but it might be mental too, I was a powerlifter and had a bad bench, I could do 265lbs for 3 while training, however I missed 210lbs in competition. There was no good reason for me to have missed that other than my being self concious about my low bench, compared to the others in my weight class. GOOD LUCK!!
