How strict are the airlines within Europe/Britian on excess luggage weight and fees?

We are going on a 6 week holiday around Europe/Britian in June/July for the 1st time - some of the internal flights are on Aer Arran & some on Ryan Air & British Airways. Aer Arran say you are only allowed 15kgs of free luggage, after that you pay 7euros per kg - do these airlines enforce the excess luggage fee or are they a bit lenient on a couple of kgs over?? Thanks!

Strict and yes they do if you are a frequent flier with them or have alot of air miles you might have a chance other than that you will pay.

As everyone else says, they are VERY strict. Just like they are in the US. If you go over, you will pay through the nose.

None of my business, but I do travel quite a bit. Nationally and internationally. And I do go away for months at a time. IMHO - You would be much better off packing less. Especially if you need to be humping all this stuff all around Europe. Trust me, you will be sick of it in no time. It gets heavier and heavier as the days go by. Not to mention, if you want to bring something back, you will have to ship it or pay through the nose to weigh down your bags even further.

And one more thing I am 99.9% sure of....all that stuff you pack, you will not need 1/2 of it.

There is an old saying that seasoned travelers pass off to newbies..."Pack 1/2 the clothes you planned to wear and bring twice the cash, and you are sure to have a fabulous holiday!"

    Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hi, I live in Europe and travel around quite a bit. Out of those you've mentioned, I've only used Ryan Air. They are fairly strict on weight limits, but they sometimes just let it slip if it's only a kg or two.

FYI, baggage is NOT free on Ryan air. You will pay out the A@@ for it too. That's why I only take carry-ons. Even with carry-ons, they have this metal box thing that you have to put your carry-on in, and if it doesn't fit in the box, they wont let you take it on the plane and you'll have to check it in.

Also, on Ryan Air, if you check in a bag, then you have to pay not only for the bag, but you have to pay for checking-in, as opposed to the free option of checking-in on-line.

These are how the "low-budget" airlines make their money. Also expect to pay for insurance and other fun extras.

Ditch the luggage and take a carry-on.

It depends on lots of things.

For example, if the flight isn't fully booked, and has lots of empty seats, they may be more lenient on excess baggage.

If you check-in early, the staff may be more likely to give you extra weight than if you show up late, or you are at the end of the queue.

But more likely, it depends on the actual check-in staff themselves. Pick one that looks like they might be having a good day! Good luck and happy travels xx

Its the luck of how busy they are and how they feel at the time.

I went over and had heaps over weight and it was never mentioned. Perhaps they have there own terms about how they go about this in regards to strictness.

I'm pretty sure there is a 20kg limit for a start. That's what I was quoted anyway.

Perhaps others can advise more info for you.

They are very strict. Thats all I will say!

They will make you pay if its the tiniest bit over, you see, if they let everyone get away with this, think how much over the weight will go?

    Have a great holiday!
