How can you tell if a kitten is blind?
My cat just had a litter of five kittens. One of them seemed like they couldn't see my hand in front of their face. They showed no signs that they knew my hand was there. It seems to be better now, but how can I tell if they're blind or not?

Kittens are born blind and deaf. Their sense of sight does not develop until about week 2 and will continue to improve until week 3 and 4. So, you are unable to judge if a kitten is blind until then.
If the kittens are older, you can test their sight.
To test your cat's vision, cover each eye in turn and see if its other eye can follow a moving finger or responds to a finger moving towards the uncovered eye. You can also test its response to a torch (flashlight) being flashed on and off in the direction of the eye, but this is not 100% accurate since blindness is not always seated in the eyeball itself - the pupil may respond to light, but the normal 'vision signals' are not correctly processed by the brain.
A cat blind in one eye may lash out in self-defence at sudden movements on its blind side. A cat with unilateral blindness may turn its head more often in order to compensate for the reduced field of vision. It may also have problems with depth perception since it has lost the stereoscopic area of vision - one-eyed cats often take several 'sightings' of a chair (etc) before jumping onto it, but quickly memorize the heights of such objects for future reference. Fully blind cats may clamber onto things rather than jump, but many also memorize heights and distances which is why furniture should not be rearranged and obstructions should not be left on the floor when there is a blind cat in the house.

Shorthair kittens begin to open their eyes at 5-8 days. Longhair kittens do not open their eyes until 10-14 days. Isn't that strange? So if some of your kittens don't have their eyes open yet, but the others do, it may be because they are longhaired. All kittens' eyes are beautiful deep orbs of blue at first. They will look like this until the kittens are three weeks old. Then the iris and pupil will form and the kitten's permanent eye colors will slowly emerge. At first, although the eyes are open, the kittens are still almost completely blind.

It depends on how old they are. Usually, cats don't open their eyes for the first week or so, and sometimes longer. If they are still crawling and not walking, then you won't be able to tell. Watch the progress of the other kittens compared to that one. If by the time it's siblings are jumping around everywhere and chasing everything in sight but the "blind" one is not, take it to your vet. He will be able to tell you if it is blind and if it is curable.

It usually depends on the age of the kitten. Kittens are born blind and deaf. They usually gain their sight after a week or two weeks and become more active around 4 weeks old. Cats' eyes are attracted to motion, so to check, you can quickly wiggle your finger back in forth in front of his eyes, or try playing with him with a toy. If he follows it with his eyes, he can see.

It takes a while for a kitten to open thier eyes and then even a little while before they can focus well...it really depends on how old they are... kittens are so clumsy at first...I would wait until they were 2 months old before I would be to concerned. And then, take them to the vet for an absolute determination.

Wait a little longer & do not try to open them. Longer than 5-6 wks, he may have an infection, so have the vet take a look at him. I had a kitten who took about a month and he is fine now with beautiful blue eyes. :)

How old are these kittens? Kittens don't have really good focus until they are a little older. Try moving your finger really slow, if the kittens see it then they are fine.

kittens like human babies can't see good at all for the first week or two. they also don't move around much they are weak like babies. they are not blind. their sight will get better over a few weeks.
