The overall development of music, meaning The Beatles music, popular music, all of Western music? That's a vague question.

You can find a ton on the role of music in society if you do the research on early 70s music. This was a great time in rock and roll and a lot of the music reflected the mindset of young society. This is easy if you look for info.

The musical style of this piece is very cool, because it is hymnal in nature. It's popular rock music to be sure, but McCartney added a sacred element. "Mother Mary" and the organ solo, and the hymnal structure make for an interesting flavor.

I've always heard this song was a message from Paul to John Lennon. The two traded quite a few insults after The Beatles split up, and many think Paul was telling John to "Let It Be" and move on and stop fighting.

Why he chose to incorporate the religious flavor into that sort of meaning is really up to you to analyze.
