What the point of having a convention if the nominee is already chosen?

All the other political parties have conventions to nominate someone, the dems and repubs just have a rallying party or what? Seems like a waste of money. Policy is never even discussed, no intellectual debate or anything goes on.

Also, why do the parties allow people from other parties to vote in their primaries? It makes no sense.

Actually, as it stands right now, both candidates are presumptive. They will not be official until the delegates at the convention nominate them.

But it is a bunch of pomp and circumstance that draws out the election even longer.

There is still some debating policy going on, but behind closed doors. There are committees of members of the party that hash out an official party platform. But the focus has greatly shifted to publicly "introducing" the candidate and the ticket to the public. Now, the highly choreographed show is the only thing the networks cover.

It is a good way too show how they are planning on running the country, with high security (such as the Democrats concentration camps or the Republicans mass arrests (like that did in '04) Lots of parties for really wealthy people and some fancy speeches about how they are going to change things when in reality they won't. All that money they waste on their silly conventions could have gone to people who need it. It also builds lots of ego and you cannot have capitalism without a big old ego!

that's particularly lots how that's been for some years. It should not be that sizeable of a controversy on the grounds which you may desire to be balloting for the presidential candidate. The vice chairman frequently would not have just about the end result that Cheney has had interior the final 8 years and that i basically doubt that the two of the vice chairman applicants could have something coming near Cheney's point of effect. it could have been extreme high quality to appreciate earlier that Obama's myths approximately desire and alter have been going to enlighten him to go with a democratic hack Washington insider for a working mate. lots for desire and alter from the socialist.

The conventions used to be the place where the nominee was actually chosen. Now it's just a big, boring political rally. It's a waste of money and it's pointless.

All that news coverage, the movie stars, and no bums on the corner make the convention star worthy.

Well Hillary may want to have one more count to see who the delegates really want.
