Cichlids are generally aggressive, though some more so than others. You should have a decent amount of space for them as well as hiding places. Are you thinking about African cichlids or South American ones? The Africans require pH of about 8-8.3 for the malawi and 9.0 for the Tanzanikans. For the South American cichlids, if you are looking at Angels or Rams, you should have your pH around 5.5. For other types you can have your pH anywhere from 6.5 to 7.5. Ask the store what they keep their tanks at.

once you've a wide sufficient tank, and characteristic a short-fin style male (i.e. plakat, or King betta), it may get alongside with numerous the smaller, a lot less aggressive dwarves, like Nanochromis, smaller Apistogramma, and probably Dicrossus. furnish some floating plant existence to encourage the betta to carry out on the exterior, and the dwarf cichlids will oftentimes take to the bottom, holding out of yet another's way for the important area.
