Is it safe to drill into a window sash?

Is it safe to attach shelf brackets to a window sash (i. e. the wooden frame that holds the pane), or is drilling the screw holes liable to crack the glass? The holes would be near the outer edge of the sash, an inch or two from the edge of the glass Attaching the brackets to the outer frame won't work very well, and the wall beneath isn't available. Please advise!

You will be alright, the glass only extends into the wood by 1/2".

  • Just do it.

But be careful the drill doesn't slip and smack the glass. Especially while driving the screws.
