Why don't hockey teams place a sumo goalie in the net?
Why not put one of those 800 lb. sumo wrestlers in from the net?? Are there rules which prohibit this? Just think the guy/women could just plop right down in front of the goal, would not even have to move. Just wondering.
(I do love hockey...go Hawks)

There aren't any rules against it, but a guy that huge would let in more goals than you think because he would not be able to move quickly enough to stop shots. Keep in mind that good shooters would have no problem picking open spots.

Obviously this question was asked based on the idea that they could cover the entire net.
The size of NHL regulation net I believe is 72"wide x 48"high. I don't think there is any human being with those dimensions, even with pads, there is no way they could cover the entire goal.
Clearly their mobility would be minimized as well, from skating side to side to trapping the puck.
What if there was a delayed penalty? How do you expect them to skate to the bench for the extra attacker?
What bout coming out the net to play the puck?
There is more to goaltending then simply stoping shots.

While you would think it would make sense, today's game is so fast and the players are so quick and skilled that those BIG Sumo guys wouldn't be able to move to even attempt to make a save.
They would be way to slow and just think about them trying to go out of the net to play the puck, which is a huge necessity for all goalies to be able to do efficiently. They wouldn't be able to skate around to the back of the net and play a puck, settle it down, or even get it out to a teammate in an instant, since he wouldn't be able to move fast enough.

This is at least the 126th time this question has been asked.
No there aren't any rules against it, but it just doesn't make any sense. Anyone big enough to just plop down on the ice and cover the whole goal wouldn't be able to get out on the ice in the first place.
The opening of the goal is 24 square feet. That'd be an awfully big guy.

they'd make the net width and height bigger. Makes no sense to just throw a sumo wrestler out to be a goalie if no one is going to make a goal. It would never happened they're profession is being a sumo wrestler not a goalie get over it.

doesnt matter how big you are, you will not be able to block the entire net. Sumo wrestlers are way to slow and would not be able to protect the corners of the net.

1.) Nobody is that huge that he would fit the entire net.
2.) If someone is that fat he wouldn't be able to move his legs or arms to make basic saves.
