Sims2 won't install at all?

My computer won't install Sims2 at all. I put it in, and it doesn't read. It does the little whirry 'reading disk' sound, then stops, and doesn't do any more.

And it says DVD compatible only.

Any ideas on what to do?

Update:

Yes, it's a DVD drive, and it's got all the system requirements.

    Are you inserting it into the DVD disk drive?

    Does your PC drive say it is DVD-ROM or CD-ROM? Your disk drive must be a DVD-ROM to read a DVD disk.
