question about GH???????????????????

it seems everytime i go on vacation the gh (total hardness) goes haywire in my aquarium. it is usually around 50 normally but when i come back my fish are all sluggish so i check the parameters and the hardness is always around 150.

what could be causing these spikes and what can i do to manage it better

    Hi M.,

What kind of substrate is in the aquarium?

For a jump like that it seems like the substrate could be leaching minerals. When you're away and not making partial water changes, the concentration of minerals could cause the jump.

There are additives you can use to soften water. 'Water Softener Pillow' comes to mind. It contains resins that remove calcium, magnesium and heavy metal ions. Here's more info: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...

Or you could have a friend or relative come over while you're away and make partial water changes for you. (o:

    Good luck,

Apparently you are doing something to maintain the gh that you cannot do while on vacation. I would start trouble shooting there. If you put something in the aquarium when you go on vacation for extra food is it the culprit? Think about what is different and go from there.
