So what is the real reason for the Gaza Invasion?

According to Israel, it is protecting itself from rocket attacks, Yet in August and September last year. only 2 rockets were fired from Gaza and firings only increased following an Israeli cross border incursion which killed several Hamas fighters. Israel also had, through its blockade, a strong negotiating position which made stopping rocket attacks a strong possibility.

Israel also has had a strong military option – invade and occupy the land immediately inside the Egyptian border and prevent smuggling of arms and explosives. Yet for years, it has allowed a virtually open and uncontrolled border.

Instead, a ground offensive against militants in a crowded city shows little sign of success and many of a public relations nightmare. Israeli spin does not add up as they had a strong position to enforce peace and now they are fighting as they did in Lebanon two years ago,

Update:

http://www.shabak.gov.il/SiteCollectionImages/engl...

Official Israeli Govt figures for September 2008 :2 rockets, 1 mortar. fired from Gaza

Jan to July 2008 31 Israeli fatalities

Aug-Sep 2008 Zero injuries, deaths.

The report clearly shows a decrease in attacks on Israelis - suicide attacks ( 59 in 2000, 1 per year in 2007-2008), attacks using explosives, and of rocket attacks.

Update 2:

RJ, the Shinbet linked to is known in English as the Israel Security Agency. Are they a reliable source for rocket attack statistics?

I have posted link to an official Israeli site for Sept 2008. Where are your sources?

Hizbollah sent rockets into Israel. Israel invaded.

Hamas sent rockets into Israel. Israel invaded.

Surely that can't be why though... there ought to be a less obvious, alterior motive...

    EDIT:

im not sure if melons was talking about me... because if so she completely misunderstood

if she was talking about mr genocide; she has no idea what genocide is. look it up, youll get a shock

the report reads "During September, 60 attacks were carried out".

and i mean the one you gave us. get some glasses

The people from Gaza (or Palestine) are Jews who married Gentiles and were then excluded from the Jewish community in accordance to the Hebrew Old Testament Law. The Israelites, after being scattered away from their homeland (around 50 to 100AD), began returning to their homeland after the Second World War. Their Homeland was, at that time, called Palestine (as far as I recall, yet not Israel) so the Allies joined together to give back Israel to the Jewish community at the time. That is how Israel was reformed. The problem was, now, that you had Arabs and Palestinians living in a land that now no longer was theirs! So since the time of Israels rebirth per say, there has been wars and terrorism going on and have not stopped. The Hebrew Old Testament (or Christian Bible) says that the rest of the world is to pray for the peace of Israel although it never says when that peace will occur.

Since I just gave some history here is why Israel attacked Gaza... Gaza was firing rockets/missiles into Israel and for three days Israel waited for the rest of the world (or U.N.) to step in and do something, but they did not. So Israel decided to do its own version of stopping its people from being bombarded with weapons of mass destruction (a Bush saying) and that is when the rest of the world woke up and said "Israel is in the wrong." Gaza was never in the wrong for shooting down Israelites, but Israel was in the wrong for protecting its own people. Ask yourself this question, "When a few Muslims ripped apart some buildings on 911 was it wrong for the US to find the people who did it? Or if a family member of yours had died on that day would you have wanted the US Government to do nothing? Today the US Government is still fight those people, do you want them to stop?

From here you yourself must decide whether this little fight, which has been going on for the past 63 years, is right or wrong. FYI: Also note that the Arabs, who are step brothers to the Israelis, have always hated Israel and almost since birth.

The reason Israel has invaded Gaza is to terrorize the population. The Israeli state wants to ethnically cleanse Israel, Gaza and the west bank.

The Hamas rockets really are nothing. Israel has F16s and all kinds of the latest weapons sold to it by the US and Europe, which it regularly uses. This is not two equal sides we have here. Gaza is under siege Israel is preventing food and medicine exports and so on moving in and out of the country hence Hamas is doing what little it can to change the situation. Israels ignores international law, the UN, its own human rights groups and carries out this war on the Palestinian people.

My guess is that they just didn't see any alternative. The Israelis can't possibly want a battle in a densely populated urban setting with a very hostile population and a motivated and well-armed force of irregulars defending from familiar positions. Despite that, the Israelis have been remarkably successful in killing a high ratio of Hamas fighters, about 46% of the dead so far. I doubt that was the motivation though. Hopefully both sides will enter into a lasting ceasefire promptly that results in no more missile attacks on Israel and a relaxed border for Gaza. Much easier said than done I am afraid.

So long story short... keeping the borders open is not good because they smuggle weapons in. invading into gaza is not good because its an act of war. and blockading it is not good because you are preventing trade to occure.

so now what do you do,

the fact that 2 rockets were fired from gaza in august and september (where did you get that info?)

    a. doesnt mean that they didnt shoot mortars and shot light weapons (guns and rifles) across the border at israelis.

    b. doesnt mean that before and after that they didnt shot tons of rockets and mortars.

i think the israeli incursion was to stop the firing of rockets which has been going on for 8 years and before that there were suicide bombings non stop.

possibly take down hamas and give control back to fatah, a less radical organization that recognized israel's right to exist, in order to negotiate a palestinian state.

possibly get back gilad shalit the israeli soldier that hamas holds since 2006.

also increase the deterrence factor israel has over its enemies

  • "Yet in August and September last year. only 2 rockets were fired from Gaza"

Wrong. Over 1,000 rockets were fired into Israel over the calendar year 2008, during the latter half of which there was supposed to be a ceasefire. Rocket attacks have increased 780% since Hamas seized the Gaza Strip. Kindly refrain from putting your less-than-creative spin on history.

One day after the UN vote to partition Palestine, Menachem Begin, the commander of the Irgun gang and Israel's future Prime Minister between 1977-1983, proclaimed:

"The Partition of Palestine is illegal. It will never be recognized .... Jerusalem was and will for ever be our capital. Eretz Israel will be restored to the people of Israel. All of it. And for Ever." (Iron Wall p. 25)

Ben-Gurion was happy and sad when the U.N. voted to partition Palestine into two states, Palestinian and Jewish. He was happy because "finally" Jews could have a "country" of their own. On the other hand, he was sad because they have "lost" almost half of Palestine, and because they would have to contend with a sizable Palestinian minority, well over 45% of the total population. In the following few quotes, you will see how he also stated that a "Jewish state" cannot survive being 60% Jewish; implying that something aught to be done to remedy the so called "Arab demographic problem". He stated on November 30, 1947:

"In my heart, there was joy mixed with sadness: joy that the nations at last acknowledged that we are a nation with a state, and sadness that we lost half of the country, Judea and Samaria, and , in addition, that we [would] have [in our state] 400,000 [Palestinian] Arabs." (Righteous Victims, p. 190)

Call me crazy, but I think it has to do with US and Iran. Israel provokes Iran (Palestinian ally) -> Iran fires on Israel -> thus pissing off US and causing the promised US-Iran war.

I agree with the answer above me, something really sick is going on in israel. There is no need for their relentless attacks, killing innocent people.
