Echelon is correct. People are afraid of change. (I have AS and I am afraid of change or the unknown, so I know NT's are afraid of it too).

I think perhaps too, many NT's just simply never heard of AS (so they probably think that AS is just a made up term).....especially if they do not work in mental health, behavioral health, special education schools or mental hospitals. I learned of AS while in the behavioral health sector and I only learned of it when I was 30.

(Mind you, we can not blame the NT's for not knowning about AS. We have to share our knowledge with them. Best bet is to write a book on how it affects you and your life).

(Even though AS and Autism is NOT a mental condition) this country (the US) does not recognize "mental health" as a need-

let alone adding Neuorlogical health to the list....

that would be too much time for our own government to add neurological health to the list. It's like "taboo" with our government "oh no, mental health, you are all crazy".

Look at all of the "children" that get help. Look at all of the senior that get help. But if you are 18-64, what do you get? The government (ADA) will only ask you if you have a physical disability. I tired to get onto disability just to see what they would say. They just did what I expected of them. Deny me since I am not in a wheelchair, not blind and not deaf.

Keep on teaching those around you about AS. AS is one of those things that is a spectrum "disorder", so no two people with AS will be alike. I have things that I do that is so AS, and others just think I'm weird. It's okay. You do not need to change for anyone.

You do not have to please everyone. Just make sure that you make yourself happy and take care of yourself. Don't worry about what others think of you.

People are scared of what they don't understand and what they cant fix. This is a very typical response of the young{if its not about them, don't want to know} and the old{Too set in their ways and the "Oh no such thing, he'll grow out of it!}. My 11 year old son just says this -- You all laugh because I am different, but I laugh because you are all the same! ---- He has knocked a few peoples opinions into chaos and I love that he stands up for himself even though he should never have had to in the first place!

I think it's not so much about people thinking Asperger's should be "cured", as it is people's believing that those who have Asperger's face some challenges in that make life just a little more difficult. People who would would like to see Asperger's "cured" or "helped" are often thinking of wishing life were a little easier for those who have it.

Many people do understand, or at least try to learn about, Asperger's.

As a person with AS, I also believe Echelon to be correct. Even I've seen a lot of changes I don't really care for, and I tend to have some difficulties adjusting to them accordlingly. I do try so very hard to be adaptable, but I can only take so much.

I believe that it all comes down to the fact that the public, which is primarily neurotypical, is afraid of change. Why do you think people try to idolize one thing and then try to BE it, instead of having a little more diversity?

It's things like these that are showing us that society is about to take a biiiiiiig header...

Join the club. Yours isn't the only difference that typical people don't try to understand. People often don't understand children with ADHD, Learning Disabilities, autism, homosexuality, disfigurement etc.

In the United States, people tend to be clones and very passive. From their privileged status as normal, they don't have any motivation to try and understand anyone else. They just want to live their lives with blinders on, thanking God that it isn't them.

people need to understand more if condions like epilepsy and blindness and aspergers there 3 condions it diffent from 1 perosn to another

they may read things about these concion

    doctors just dont listen.

    good qustion.

you think by now more people would not by 2009 but they dont and i think they dont want to now if they talk to people with any of these condions it be alot easy for them to understand there.

Neurotypicals think that since aspie's look 'normal', and have NT intelligence that asperger's is a convenient excuse to be rude.

    To put it simply....

As one with Asperger's can not understand NT...an NT can nto understand that part of Asperger's.

Source(s): my husband has Asperger's but I am NT...there are things about each other that we just can't understand....regardless of how much we try
