Is it OK to eat an under-ripe pumpkin?
I've grown some pumpkins (never tried before) and most of them seem fine apart from the leaves getting a mould on them. But one of them stopped growing - I think I damaged the stem by mistake and it shrivelled up.
It has a dark green skin on the outside and is half the size of the other ones. The flesh looks pretty good though - apart from being a bit paler and the seeds are have a greenish tinge.
Does anyone know if we would we get sick if we cooked it and ate it? Would it taste horrible?
Hi Muff - scamp! answer the question! ....or at least give me a star!

It will most likely be very bland and flavorless, what you could try is cut away the outer skin, scoop out all seed, and cut into cubes size pieces and slowly fry in oil olive or butter....such as frying zucchini....you could also try breading it...use what ever spices you and your family like for flavor.
I have never done this, it would be an experiment that is for sure....but if it was me, that is what I would try first instead of throwing it away.
As long as you cook it, it should not harm you or your family.
Do you have a compost pile or container...? If you do add in any unused vegetables or fruits that are under or over ripe.

It won't cause you any harm but I don't know about the taste or how hard it will be even after cooking. Try it. What do you have to lose?
