What exactly does cyclic AMP do?

I have read that cyclic AMP is involved in increasing calcium levels in blood(homeostasis), then I also read that it is a secondary receptor during interaction of water soluble hormones with target cells. What exactly does it do and how does it relate to calcitonin?

In humans, it is used as a regulatory signal for the regulation of glycogen, sugar, and lipid metabolism
