Well call it what they will to me it they will stay the dull old North and South Island. Easier for me to say.

Interestingly they were almost called New Ulster and New Munster (or something). I think those are much better names.

Always referred to them as The Mainland (South Island), Pig Island (North) and the anchor. A rose by any other name is still but a rose.

No matter what changes are made to appease the asinine gods of political correctness they will always and forever more be simply The South Island, and The North Island.

Leave them as North & South Island. The way this country is going it is causing racialism by the so called natives of this country. You dont have white only schools, special loans & hand outs. I used to like our natives, but now I would not help one if they were in distress of any shape of or form, I just walk on by leaving them where they lie. Until they stop all the give me, give me attitude. They need to get off their backsides & work for what they want. At 50yrs old you want to rename the islands, whats wrong with our country aren't we a multi cultural sociaty now!! wake up! get with society natives or take a permament sleeping pill.

In the article i think that you will find that the names of Northa and South islands will stay as they are they will just be formally recognised, they will however have two names as like most of our minitries etc in this country one representing english and the other representing Maori.

I think it is up to the public to decide on the Maori names, as there is most proberly some strong opinions relating to Maori mythology etc

Aotearoa is the Maori name for north island and Tonga means south in maori, so this should avoid confusion.

They are fine as they are. There's absolutely no chance that I'll ever even try wrap my tongue around 'Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu'

If they're going to have actual names why can't they be something that the majority of New Zealanders can say? i.e in english, perhaps?
