Has there ever been a winner of the Vezina Trophy who missed out on the playoffs?

Niklas Backstrom is the third nomination for the Vezina and didn't make the playoffs. Its been bugging the hell out of me, has there been a goalie who has won the Vezina without making the playoffs? Who and when and with what team? No real reason, I just want to sound smart for my loser friends.

No. Since the Vezina trophy was changed in 1981 (used to be the goalie on the team with the least goals against, which is now the award for the Jennings trophy), no goalie from a non-playoff team has won the award.

Before 1981, I am too lazy to look it up, but I would have to assume that the team with the least goals against in the league would make the playoffs.

So your answer is no, this would be the first time (though I think he has zero chance of winning)

Hart Trophy: Daniel Alfredsson woman Byng: Pavel Datsyuk Vezina: Dominim Hasek or Martin Brodeur Calder: Patrick Kane artwork Ross: Daniel Alfredsson James Norris: Nicklas Lidstrom Conn Smythe: Um....this could be a playoff award bill Masteron: Jason Blake Lester Pearson: Vincent Lecavalier Jack Adams: Brent Sutter Frank Selke: Rod Brind'Amour Jennings Trophy: Detroit Clancy Trophy: no longer in accordance with a season Maurice Richard Trophy: Alexander Ovechkin Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award: Pascal LeClaire

  • Not that I'm aware of.

It will be interesting to see how Backstrom does next season without Lemaire around. For some strange reason, most goalies do better under Lemaire, not so well after leaving him, or he leaves. Chris Terreri is a good example of that.

it makes it more impressive when you think about it

can you imagine his numbers on a powerhouse team.

the fact that he has such good and competitive numbers on a team that wasnt a super-winning team means that they could especially in the wins column be much higher.

i think it would be impressive, but we shall see

other sports have shunned their best players for not being on a winning team . . .
