Help my dog is really bad for the groomer?

Ok I have a 1 year old yorkie and I took him to the groomers for the first time today. I know I should have started him earlyer but I have been brushing him and all of that he just started to need it {he gets him nails done at the vets} well when I dropped him off he was fine but when I picked him up the groom was telling me how bad he was. She almost made me cry saying that he was totally untrained and very bad. She said she had to have some one hold him down to clip his banges. She said I need to work with him at home because no groomer is going to take him when he is this bad. Well he looks great all trimmed up {ears, eyes, belly and all of that} so my ? is how to I get him to be better for the groomer? He is great at home. He doesn't like his face being cut but other than that he loves his baths and daily brushing. HELP I really want him to be good for them.

I'm a groomer and I come across dogs like this all the time. I wouldn't go so far as to tell the owner they're "totally untrained and very bad" though. I try to say it nicely and encourage them to work with the dog at home and show them how.

Some things you'll want to get him used to are having his face held so they can trim it. Put your hand around his mouth gently to hold his head still, then give him a treat before he has a chance to start wiggling. Gradually increase the time you're holding his mouth shut before he gets the treat. That way he might not give them a hard time for trimming around his eyes and face.

Also get him used to having his feet held up in the air so his legs can be trimmed and brushed out. I deal with a lot of dogs who aren't used to this and they constantly try to pull their foot away, which is dangerous because they could get nicked by the scissors.

If its a case of him behaving for you, but not for a stranger, he might need more work in this area. Have family friends he doesn't see very often come over and help with the grooming process. Get him used to strangers handling, brushing and touching him.

If all this doesn't help, maybe look into mobile groomers who will come to your house. They might be more willing to let you help so he's calmer.

    Hope this helped some!

Try getting other people to brush him. He is good for you, but he may now like other people messing with him. Get a friend to come over a brush him for a bit while you are there. Once is he good with different people brushing and handling him at home, try going to someone else's house and brush him. Brushing him on a table can help him get used to that too. You can also take him to the groomer and just get him brushed.

As it was his first time at the groomers, he was probably scared and not comfortable. Getting him used to the groomer can help. Even if you can just get him to hang out at the groomers for a bit.

You could try to find a groomer who works at their home or a small salon. Try to get one who will groom your dog all at once. That way he will only be there for a couple of hours instead of all day. Only having one person work on him could help too.

You know what.. I'd take him to another groomer. I use to bring my dog to a pet groomer and he was very fearful of going in on the leash that made me think. He never was like that going places.. The next groomer I asked if i could stay while he's beening groomed they said no.. I continued on till I found a groomer that would allow me to stay and watch. i had a poodle he too didn't like his paws being touched and the razor going over his face. So i watched they have a harness where the dogs head fits into nicely not hurting him and she hold his mouth shut with one hand then goes over it with the shaver no problem and she was patient with him. She had to be he was very old almost blind was deaf and hand a hunch back ( he had a spine problem as he got older).. So you can find a groomer you just have to go through the yellow pages and keep calling till someone wants your business. if they want your money and they have nothing to hide they will allow you to come in.

This lady your going to might not have the patience or she' more interested in how many she can get done in a hour as she will make more money the more dogs she see's in a day. but quality over quantity when its your baby. Oh you may have to pay a bit more or offer to pay extra more .make it worth her while. tip her nicely too. I always tipped nicely I wanted my dog to have the best.

You can try another groomer, but in long run she was right your dog is ill trained because she has never been to groomer. Work with the dog and allow the woman to groom her again and if she still belittles you then find another.

All dogs go through this, all of my poodles go through it even though I acclimate them to pregrooming when they are still tiny.

I think he needs to get used to ppl cutting his face do it like a couple of times so he gets used to it If you cut the fur on its face and hes good and hes not bad like at the groomers give him a treat sooner or later he will find out that cutting his face is good

The groomer was very unprofessional to treat you that way.

Have you tried trimming him before? Maybe that would help. Just a little trimming at a time, and with lots of praise/treats; gradually increase how much you trim him over time.

"Me" above is right. Go to a better groomer, maybe one your vet recommends.

that is common from time to time to lessen some too short, fairly if the nails are somewhat lengthy (the speedy of the nail grows out with the nail) and also if the nails are black, a lot extra sturdy to work out the position the speedy. yet commonly, once you reduce one too short, you're somewhat extra careful with the subsequent. call your Groomer and clarify that you're dissatisfied, she might want to easily have a sturdy reason. yet never take your puppy some the position in case you sense uncomfortable.

otay my dog dad had the same problem but all the answers that u have gotten are right change groomers!! they don't know how to do it the right way nor are they Professional to their clients!! but at home if u have one of the electric shavers turn it on in front of him sometime the noise freaks them out and they never calm down, so if u turn it on around him and leave it on for a good 20 min and talk to him tell him its otay and u are fine never say sorry for wat u are doing if u need to cuz they pick up on ur feelings u have to be strong for u dog so u have to be calm. then try clippers scissors cliping hair around the body and tail and legs little bye little then work on the face they will get used of it my dads dog did!!!!

Try a different groomer and explain at the start that he may give trouble. An experienced groomer knows how to handle a dog.
