Cat hides when family comes over - how to socialize?
My elderly inlaws adopted a 4 month old male feral kitten after it came back sick from trap and neuter. It is now 10 mos old and is reasonably social with them and coexists with their 6-yr female Siamese. But it hides under a bed when their adult children and grandchildren visit, for the whole 4-5 hours relatives are there. They worry because they want one of us to adopt the cat when they pass away. How can they help socialize the cat?

I have had two cats for over ten years that always hid whenever people came to my house. I got two kittens this summer - one of them greets everyone at the door, the other runs away to hide.
I think it relates to some inborn temperament and don't feel there is much you can do to change it. I just let my cats do what they need to do to feel comfortable in my home. You can still bring the cat into your home when it is necessary and it will adjust to you.
