Where did Cain get his wife from? and who was Cain to be protected from?

Since up till this point in Genesis there were only four people on Earth, Adam, Eve, Abel and Cain. Once Cain killed Abel genesis goes thus:

15 So the LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son.

Update:

Yes I did read the rest but wasn't going to bung the whole lot in as it's irrelevant to the question. No one could exist in Nod unless they came from Adam and Eve, which they clearly don't. There is absolutely no mention of God creating Nod and putting people in Nod in parallel with creating man as in Adam and Eve. I want those who take literal creationism seriously to prove where in the story of Genesis these people are created or begat from. No conjecture - actual chapter and verse.

Update 2:

It would seem from the answers so far that the only way to believe in creationism is through rationalisation of the story, which literal creationist refuse to do. Are there are any Literal Creationists out there who can refute the answers and provide the literal reference in Genesis?

Update 3:

Some interesting answers, but no websites cited, but everyone was suggesting answers in a similar vein, such as Adam and Eve having many more children suggested to me that this folk story must have some basis so I did a troll and came upon this one in the first search http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/nab/who-w... which specifies Genesis 5:4.

Since no one suggested that reference I will then put the choice of winner to public vote.

Genesis only talks about those four, but that doesn't mean it's a complete list. Additionally, there is no indication how old any of the characters involved are. They could very well be hundreds of years old my the time the 1st murder took place. That would leave enough time for Adam and Eve to have other children and those children to have children, etc. Think of how many generations there have been since the 1700's. There could be hundreds of thousands of people on the earth by the time Cain and Abel were three hundred years old.

Cain was the first murderer there may well have been others who wanted him dead. (Check the news today)

Why did you stop reading Genesis up until that point? If you had read a bit farther, you would have known that Cain was thrown into the "Land of Nod" where he took a woman there and they had children, and that was the actual beginning of time for man beyond Eden. Cain was thrown out of Eden into this land that was located "East of Eden."

It's no wonder how so many only get half truths from the world, if they are too lazy to read.

  • There were others in the land of nod. Adam and Eve were the first to be created but not the ONLY created. And cain was being protected so that people didn't take out revenge.

Maybe Adam & Eve were just the first people God talked to. Or maybe after creating people with evolution, he make a couple Himself, just to see if they would be any better than the other ones. And, as usual, we disappointed Him.

Perhaps the people God filled the world with before He made Adam and Eve.

  • Many assume they were young boys when this happened. Perhaps they were paired up with sisters at the time and considering average ages they probably were not kids. Women do not get much mention in Old Testament times unless they do something extraordinary like Ruth, Jael and Hannah.

Does mankind tell you all of their business. No they just let you know the basics. What you needs to know. God says I love you. Mankind wants to know the reasons why. God said seek me and I will let you know. You said sure I just do not have the time. Tell me.

God said I have told you so what do you want? You say," I want more."

What have you done for God lately?

You are concentrating on a unfinished story of sin. Cause and effect.

God gives us detail and we want to know why.

God gives us protection from our enemies even when we sin against them. God knew cain would kill his brother. He also knew he would be like a fugitive.

We are fugitives when we refuse to call on God for help and wait on him for answers.

So when we are fugitives we are open for massacre and mayhem.

Source(s): If we knew all the answers to the scriptures then we would be God. So we are not him. We need wisdom,God gives us wisdom when we develop and ear to listen to his word. Who do you need protection from? The devil and his associates? Mark 5. The man called legion.

"The Talmud tells us that Cain and Able were both born with twin sisters, who married the other brother. The source is Rasgi - Genesis 4:1." -- Rabbi Shraga Simmons

Either incest, he married one of eves daughters, or he got a wife from the land of nod, which would mean original sin is contagious as well as hereditary.

Adam and Eve had "many sons and daughters," according to the myth.
