Is it unfair to want a dog when you work long hours a day?
I really want a small dog to love. I would love to take him for walks when I get home from work and on weekends so both of us could get in shape. Is it cruel to leave a dog inside all day?

No way.
I think as long as you take good care and love an animal. It's fair.
My sister recently moved into an apartment with a multipoo and she works from like 12pm - 8pm and then the next day from like 8am - 5pm And she takes him for walks day and night and she loves him.And he's really lazy. But she keeps him in her kitchen with a gate. But mostly he goes in his crate if she is at work. Depends really on what kind of dog.
You should just avoid really hyper dogs and dogs that need a lot of exercise like a blood hound.
And you might have to take time off for a new puppy. But once dogs hit 1 or 2. They are perfectly fine to stay home alone for 8 hours or more.

Get an adult dog with a dog walker, a puppy needs companion much of it not just walking. With an adult dog you can walk them 4 times a day play fetch teach commands and let them lay in your living room floor. just being around you should be enough. Careful when adopting from pounds i recommend humane society or places that attempts to train or wont adopt anything.

Well, it's hard to leave puppies alone all day, but if you're able to work with him and tire him out when you're with him, I don't think it's cruel. Dogs can stay in their kennels for a long time because they think of it as their own as "den" and they're comfortable and secure there. Plus, if you adopt a dog, you're still saving a dog's life! It's nicer to let him sleep all day in your comfy house than to let someone put him to sleep! Life at a shelter isn't all that great either for dogs, they don't get much attention there, so I think you're still doing the dog a favor. So I think you should get a dog if you're willing to put in the work for him when you're home!

How long of hours you talking? I work 8 hours and have a puppy, but I get up a few hours before work so i can spend time with her, or my husband does if i have to go to the dr or run an errand and cant take her. Then at night we take her on a long walk and play for quite a while before bedtime. On the weekends she is more or less always with us, including going out to see family.
I don't think its unfair to want one, but you need to figure out how you make sure they are getting enough exercise and attention. One thing you could do if you work extremely long hours is have one of your neighbors, or a walking service come by and walk them and play with them in the middle of the time you are at work.
**edit**
oh she also has my cat that loves to play with her at home. So when we arent there she isn't completely home alone. And it hasn't impacted her potty training. she is doing awesome with it.

If you are talking about a puppy then they need alot of attention that you may not be able to give them. If it's an older dog that is trained not to go inside the house then it might be ok. Just remember that animals need time with there owners like people need time with there familys. Good luck.

If you want a puppy then I'd say yes. Someone really needs to be there during the day, and the puppy will need to be house-broken. Maybe you might consider an adult dog that's already housebroken?

No, but it is cruel to leave a puppy inside. As long as you give him plenty of attention and exercise when you are with him, he should be sleeping most of the day. Adopt an adult :)
