What can I do non-medically to unstuff my nose so I can sleep?

I have a cold but have bad reactions to decongestants. Surely there is something I can do.

Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec) can help dry up your sinuses without the side effects of decongestants. If you decide to try an antihistamine, make sure you look at the ingredients listed on the box before buying- a lot of products include a combination of decongestants and antihistamines. If you need help finding a single-agent antihistamine, ask the pharmacist to help you locate one.

Also, which antihistamine you choose should be based on whether you want to take it at night or in the morning. All antihistamines have some risk of drowsiness, but Zyrtec is probably the least drowsy. Benadryl knocks most people out- bad if you're going to work, good if you're trying to go to sleep! :)

Another option you can try is a saline nasal spray. This works directly in your nose- not in the rest of your body- to dry up nasal secretions.

Hope this helps! Feel better soon!

There are irrigation kits that use normal saline....check at the pharmacy or the natural section of a grocery story or health food store. Eating foods with peppers (like hot wings or hot chili etc) will help drain your head. Medically, Mucinex is an expectorant and will thin secretions but does not have same side effects as decongestants and people with high BP can use it. So ask your pharmacist or doctor/nurse about it if all others fail.

Stand in the shower to open sinuses,,, also if you cant get them clear that way, then take a bulb syringe and mix salt and water together and squirt up into the nose, do this several times, this will open them up.. Hope this helps.

You could eat Wasabi, but its very spicy and if you don't like spicy stuff then maybe you shouldn't. But it really does open up your sinuses.

You could also take a water bottle and just poor it right into your nostrils. I'm not talking like the whoole bottle but a little bit will do.

Our family uses a sinus nasal rinse you can get at Wal.Mart or Rite Aid and it works great it is just saline mix you add to water and use the bottle that comes in the kit.
