  • Maggie is so cute, isn't it?

I definitely agree that it's best to give her a longer form on the birth certificate, though, so she'll have something more grown-up to go by when she's older.

Margaret is a good, respectable name. I've always had a soft spot for it after reading "Little Women." It's not particularly in style now, which could be an argument either for or against using it. However, if it doesn't seem like the right one for you, here are some of its international variants. Maggie would be a reasonable nickname for any of these:

Marguerite -- the French version; also the French word for the daisy

    Margo/Margot -- another French version

Margareta (mar-gar-AY-tuh) -- German version; main drawback is that it sounds somewhat like a margarita

Margery / Marjorie -- Medieval English versions of the name that I think are worthy of reconsideration; they're very happy and sprightly. Drawback: They remind some people of margarine, though I don't think that should put you off using such a great name.

Here's a list of other names related in origin to Margaret:

Other names with the "Mag" sound could work as well:

Magnolia -- a flowering tree; the state flower of Mississippi and Louisiana

Magdalene / Magdalena -- mean "from Magdala," a town on the sea of Gaililee whose name means "tower." This name is most familiar because of the biblical Mary Magdalene, one of the most important female followers of Christ.

Madeleine / Madelina -- These might be a stretch, but since they ultimately come from the name "Magdalene" you might be able to get away with using Maggie as a nickname. I think nicknames connected by linguistic history if not directly by sound are legitimate choices.

Madrigal -- The most important form of secular vocal music in the Renaissance and Baroque eras. It's a daring choice, but it has a pretty, magical sort of sound, and it could be meaningful for parents who are musically-inclined.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!
