Well, I live on the south coast of Southland by choice, not because I was born here and too lazy to move, like many of the locals. I think the further south the better, except that Stewart Island is horrendously expensive. West Coasters are inbreeds. There are a lot of inbreeds here too, but with the Internet and all the other cheap communications, that doesn't matter much. Gangs are a minor problem in Invercargill compared with the North Island. By a lucky coincidence, widespread Internet access coincided with rising fuel prices. We live 10 km. from the nearest shop. When we arrived here in the early 1980s I had to make 2 or 3 trips a day into the nearest township for employment, shopping and things like banking. Now I make 1 or 2 trips a week.

WAIHEKE ISLAND of course. There is only 8000 people, no traffic lights, no stress, beautiful scenery and only 35 minutes from downtown Auckland. A relaxing commute to work, read the paper, have a coffee on the way and a beer on the way home. Beats being stuck in traffic! It's not just the best place in New Zealand. It's the best place on earth. It's Heaven.

As an ex-Aucklander I'd say don't live there. Try Wellington or Christchurch depending on what kind of job you're looking for (Wellington generally has more options depending on what you're after). Generally the South Island is better than the North for tourist type stuff so bear that in mind if on a working holiday.

^^ Awesome Answer.
Levin is the place to be. It is where alot of the Elderly come to retire. Must mean we got a pretty warm, Cheap area to live in. If you are out of town - Farming - It is only a 5-10 minute drive into town. Beaches are within a 15 minute drive (Depends on how fast you drive). Friendly Locals. Cheap meals. From majority of places, It is a 5 minute walk and you are in the main street. Parks for the Children. Cafe's for the adults and Skate park for the Teens. Nice lake to look over across at night time (Papaitonga)

I have lived overseas for 20+ years and returned to N.Z. a year ago. All of N.Z. is beautiful in so many ways but not sure that it is such a good place to live anymore. We are looking at moving back overseas. The violence, drug problems, medical system, gang problems just to name a few. And all this being P.C. instead of telling the truth is ridiculous. And whats going to happen in as they are saying 6 or so years from now when 60% of the population will be over 60 who's going to pay for that with such a small paying tax base left working oh yeah lets just raise the retirement age so we can all work right up to just turning our toes up. And who is paying for all this money being constantly handed out to different people for no reason. I take it the final aim is to completely destroy N.Z. financially as no one that gets into the government seems to have what it take to actually make the real changes that are needed. Everyone is being so P.C. lets not tell the truth and offend anyone heaven forbid. I love this Country and have always been so proud to call myself a Kiwi and praise this country no end. That will all be changing now. Will leave it at this as there is more I could and would love to say but heck we must be P.C. so thanks for letting me ramble.

Wanganui. Nothing really happens here apart from the odd Mayor drawing attention to us. Our weather seems pretty average, not too hot not too cold. We could do with more industry of course and a regenerated Port but then we might become a little bit Aucklandish. Nah Wanganui is a little city not too small and definitely not too big. I can live with the parochialism and unavailability of stuff at short notice.
The most unfortunate thing about us is we totally ignore the fact that we are a seaside city. If you were to visit us drive to the beach and see the state of what would be any other city's jewel in their crown.
Oh and the spell checker is warning me that Wanganui has an "h". That is so typical of us isn't it? No kidding the spell checker's top suggestion is to change to the word "wanking!!!!" Anyone want to talk about conspiracy theories? It is all our mayors fault. Whoever that is.

Auckland is definitely the best place to live in in New Zealand. The city has consistently been voted in the top five cities in the world for lifestyle. There are plenty of green spaces. It is surrounded by two harbours. The city is not too big and is easy to get around. There is plenty to do in Auckland for all people with facilities for most sports and leisure activities. Being the largest city in the country it has the most up-to-date international airport within a short distance of central Auckland. It is a port city. There are many shopping malls. The weather is mostly pleasant. There are many superb educational facilities in Auckland. Most suburbs in Auckland are easily accessible.

My answer is Wellington because its easy to just jump on a bus or train or if you live in the city you can walk everywhere and you are there within 5-10 minutes. So I think Wellington is the best place to live. Also there is always something interesting for all ages on around Wellington.
I would say Palmerston North too because its small and everything is so close but since moving to Wellington Palmy is boring and has nothing to do. Also they ruined the Clock Tower and The Square. So I suggest not living in Palmerston North.
I hope that helps. =]

Palmerston North, No doubt
It has everything you need easy access to city , centred around the Square
,Modern mixed with the old, not too crowded, plenty of parking, well maintained gardens, parks, walks along the river, and esplanade, sports facilities and great Swimming centre at the Lido,
The best Library in NZ, the Plaza, is being enlarged, with even more good shops for the woman, active theatres. and more Coffee shops and restaurants you can count,
Housing is a good mix with every type and price range
Also its easy access to the rest of NZ via, Road ,Rail, or Air
Palmy has had loads of negative press, and you should come here and see for yourself don't believe all you are told its a great place to live

Thames on the coromandel Pen
or Feilding - in the Manawatu both places are so beautiful.
Why, Thames is a modern / old gold town with its beauty of the sea and rich in scenic adventures. It used to be my home town.
Feilding is another beautiful place in NZ why because you get the best of both worlds, country living, yet close to a city to enjoy city life. Its town when I was last there - the had the town in lights display and the during the day its a touch of class
