During civil war, how were borders between union and confederate states formed?

And how would one cross a border from the south into the north? Especially speaking of crossing into west virginia. Was there a militia? a fence? etc... thanks!

They were the same kind of borders the States still use today.. mostly natural landmarks.. rivers.. mountains even ancient trails.. Then, just as today.. there were no fences to mark the borders, especially since the U.S. Geological Survey DIDN'T EXIST at the time of the Civil War so Amerika HAD NOT BEEN SURVEYED and without an accurate land survey it would be pretty hard to establish an exact border.

I don't understand your question. Be more specific. By the way, West Virgibnia was not admitted to the Union until 1863.
