A serious case of hypocrisy?

The Australian reported the security discussions caused a split between high profile freelance players and Ricky Ponting when the situation was outlined at an Australian Cricketers' Association meeting in Sydney on Tuesday. The paper said Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, who have supported each IPL tournament, clashed with Ricky Ponting over the way forward.

Cricket Australia-contracted players want to follow the ACA's advice while Warne and Hayden, a Cricket Australia board member, have said they want to go. If players pull out of the tournament they could be banned from future IPL editions, a decision which would cost some of them millions of dollars.

(from this article on cricinfo http://www.cricinfo.com/ipl2010/content/current/st...

Do you really think Warne, Gilchrist & Hayden would be arguing about it if they were being asked to pull out of a test tour to India due to safety reasons. I think they would express their fears strongly (something I have never criticised them for.) All of a sudden they've become fearless!

Please note:

** I'm not suggesting it's not (or it is) safe to go to India & participate - only that their response to the threats is very different now.

** I mention the Aussie players because they are the one in the article - I'm sure the same applies to players from my country (NZ) & other countries.

Update:

@ Long Live Test Cricket: True, but rightly or wrongly, that kind of event never has the same impact when it happens in England. You may be able to set me right on this, but I don't remember any team ever cancelling a tour to England for security reasons.

Shoe, You have to remember that those three were part of the Aussie Team of 2005 Ashes when there was 7/11 Bomb Blast in London. Kidding? They haven't stepped back then. Stop your hypocrisies.

Sachin is the most targeted player by the terrorists. He itself feels safe playing in IPL. IPL Board has ensured enough safety for the players who come. If you have worries, don't come. Its our Local T20 Tournament. The only thing is the ones who don't come can't participate in future IPL. Thats all. We don't care if Ponting comes or not. We have already 98 players in wait as replacements,. Moreover its just 4 foreigners in the side. If the attacked SL players feel no problem, whats the problem with the NZ, Eng and Aussie players? IPL doesn't recognize the player associations. So the players associations is just doing these stunts to make IPL obey to it It won;t happen. If SA, Aus, SL, NZ can tour us why can't they come and play here. Moreover NZ and Aus players are out of most of IPL due to national fixture. England players are very few in number. So no worry at all about them

Where's the hypocrisy? if there's more money on the line then they decide the risk is worth it.

You don't get paid much for the honour of test appearances, so it's just not worth the risk of being caught up in some terrorist action in such an unstable country as India.

But apparently you can get big bikkies from playing in this IPL so the risk is worth it.

I don't understand why you've got a problem with Warne and Hayden taking the risk. I would too in their shoes. Doesn't change the fact India has a high terrorist risk.

$100,000USD+ for a few weeks of playing sports when you are retired from major international cricket would send most to India to play. If I was picked up for an IPL team and offered $100,000.00USD to play a season (or in Pollard's case a lot more) I would be sticking up saying India is safe to travel in order to earn that huge amount of money. This would be despite the fact world wide security sources have evidence to prove that it is not safe to visit as a white person.

Yeah, it is, on News Limited's part. Fancy quoting the Oz, when they have a stake in it. Furthermore, what do three retired players have to do with anything.
