What is the Book of Zohar?

Is it part of the Torah, a collection of tales and stories? Why is it so difficult to read?

The book of Zohar is a commentary on the Torah. It is not a book of tales, it only speaks of a person's inner desires, the structure of the soul. It is meant for all of humanity, so that together we can elevate to a new level of existence fullfilling the purpose of creation.

Here is a great website that will give you a better understanding of what the book Zohar really is.

The Zohar (Hebrew: זֹהַר‎, lit Splendor or Radiance) is the foundational work in the literature of Jewish mystical thought known as Kabbalah.[1] It is a group of books including commentary on the mystical aspects of the Torah (the five books of Moses) and scriptural interpretations as well as material on theosophic theology, mythical cosmogony, and mystical psychology. The Zohar contains a discussion of the nature of God, the origin and structure of the universe, the nature of souls, redemption, the relationship of Ego to Darkness and "true self" to "The Light of God," and the relationship between the "universal energy" and man. Its scriptural exegesis can be considered an esoteric form of the Rabbinic literature known as Midrash, which elaborates on the Torah.

There aren't any stories in it and it's not that it's difficult to read, it's that it's difficult to understand. According to Jewish Law you cannot learn the Zohar until :

    1) you have fully studied the whole Torah - because the Zohar is Torah explanations on a much deeper level as well as understanding of the supernatural things.

    2) It's so complicated that you cannot learn it until you are over 40 years old because according to Jewish belief, a person can literally go insane if he is not able to comprehend the Zohar's contents.

    3) You cannot learn it unless you have somebody well studied in it teaching it over to you because it can easily be misinterpreted.

    Hope I helped :)
