Yahoo Answers is shutting down on 4 May 2021 (Eastern Time) and the Yahoo Answers website is now in read-only mode. There will be no changes to other Yahoo properties or services, or your Yahoo account. You can find more information about the Yahoo Answers shutdown and how to download your data on this help page.

I click on a link and it redirects me. What's happening?

On ie8, google, I click a link and it takes me to florida-traffic.com or yellow pages and I even had a hard time getting to this page because I was being redirected when I tried yahoo answers. (I had to type a random question to get here) By the way I have Norton and its been blocking a certain thing over and over.

Sounds like you might be infected with the same virus I was. These "rootkit" viruses are very good at hiding themselves from antivirus software. But there are some tools out there that look specifically for these things and remove them.

The 1st one to try is TDSSKiller.exe:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid...

If that doesn't do the job you can try Combofix (I used this to fix my redirect problem):

Oh, and to reduce the chances of a virus like this installing itself again in future, you should update Java (I heard it installs itself by taking advantage of a vulnerability in a previous version of Java). To do this open Control Panel and (in classic view) open the Java Control Panel. On the Update tab click the "Update Now" button. Enabling automatic updates for Java is also a good idea.

That's typically a sign you have the "Google Redirect Virus" - a virus created with the sole intention of redirecting your search results to random advertisement websites. This virus is very common and works by "hijacking" the normal redirection that Google & other search engines use to monitor your traffic. Each time you click a link on Google, it doesn't go straight to the target website... it goes to Google.com first and then redirects you. This virus basically takes this redirect and sends it to an ad site.

Unfortunately, removing the Redirect Virus is quite difficult, because it just changes a few settings on your computer. Unlike normal viruses, this infection does not have any application / settings files that are constantly running on your PC, making it extremely difficult for "standard" virus removal tools to get rid of. If you want to get rid of this infection, you should try "combofix" which you can see here: http://www.personalcomputerfixes.com/spyware/how-t...

Virus your computer is badly infected.

after you have removed the virus perhaps it would be

a good idea to remove Norton,

as it is nothing more than commercial crapware

and it has allowed your computer to become infected.

    First

click on Start > Run. Type in the following into the open box.

    devmgmt.msc

then Click on OK. This will run Device Manager. In Device Manager,

click on View > Show Hidden Devices.

expand all the devices by clicking on the "Plus" sign. Now try to find

    TDSSserv.sys or clbdriver.sys or oUltraf or seneka.sys,

right click on whatever one you found and select Disable.

Please make sure that you do not select the Un-Install option

otherwise infection will be back once you reboot your computer.

if none of them are there do not worry,

it could be something simpler but follow what comes next.

Delete everything in the windows temp folder,

    C > Windows > Temp

    Delete all cookies,

Delete all temporary internet files(not to be confused with windows temp files)

these are best deleted via your internet browsers.

it will save you messing about in the the hidden system files

Delete everything in the prefetch folder.

    C > Windows > Prefetch

    reset internet explorer,

tools > internet options > Advanced tab > reset .

    Delete the hosts file,

    C > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc > HOSTS

A clean hosts file will be written by windows when you reboot later.

Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file

you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Delete the flash cookies found in the macromedia, #Shared Objects folder.

    c > users > "your name" > App Data > Roaming > macromedia > Flash player > #Shared Objects

delete everything you find in the #Shared Objects folder

App Data is a hidden folder so you will have to enable view hidden folders.

Run a full scan with this

    Sophos Anti-Rootkit : http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/sophos-a...

    and remove everything it finds.

    Sophos Anti-Rootkit DOWNLOAD : https://secure.sophos.com/support/cleaners/sar_15_...

Then run a full scan with this and remove what it finds.

Super anti spyware Pro : http://www.superantispyware.com/

Super anti spyware Pro DOWNLOAD : http://downloads.superantispyware.com/downloads/SU...

this has a tool built in that can reset the URL prefix's

    USE IT.

    reset your router to default.

your redirect virus should now be gone.

    You computer is badly infected.

Norton is blocking the virus from connecting to the internet, with who-knows-what information of yours.

Have you run a full system scan yet with your Norton and quarantined what it found? I would strongly suggest it.

Your anti virus program is working as it should, so I suggest that you could have a virus or malware and you should do a full system scan, and what ever your program finds make sure that you either quarantine or delete it, that should solve your problem

oh boy i've dealt with that. fun one isn't it? :) Download, install, then update spybot S&D, trojan killer, and Microsoft Security Essentials (make sure you remove NAV). Then go into safe mode and scan with all of them.
