How many genuine greats has your country produced?

To show what I mean, here's my view on New Zealand:

We've had many players who have been great players for New Zealand (eg. John Wright, Nathan Astle and Stephen Flemming...), but who wouldn't be considered genuine greats on the world stage.

We've had quite a few players who would have been considered among the greats of their own era (Martin Crowe, Bert Sutcliffe, maybe Daniel Vettori...), but who probably won't be talked about in 50 years time (except in New Zealand).

But we've had one (sadly only one) genuine great - Sir Richard Hadlee

Update:

And name them.

Update 2:

@Rori: I'm old enough to remember Crowe's career from start to finish, but no, I'm not old enough to remember the other players that you mentioned (except, of course, Richard Hadlee). I have, however followed cricket for long enough to know of the players you mentioned (I mentioned most of them in my question.) Walter Hadlee's magnificent career of 11 tests at a princely average of 30 hardly ranks him amongst the true greats - though he may have been a great leader.

As far as Donnelly goes, Like Stewie Dempster, he's a player that may have been good enough to be ranked among the true greats, but we'll never really know - he just didn't play enough. That's why they are still talked about in New Zealand, but very few people overseas have heard of them.

We have certainly more than one my friend . Maybe you are a bit too young to know some of NZ's other great players on the world stage. Here is a list of my players. Richard Hadlee, Walter Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Bert Sutcliffe, Martin Donnelly and more lately you would have to rate Daniel Vettori up there as well. I suggest you google these names to find out how great they were/are.

  • 1.) Sachin Tendulkar

    2.) Rahul Dravid

    3.) VVS Laxman

    4.) Anil Kumble

    5.) Kapil Dev

    6.) Sunil Gavaskar

Hmmmm.....my country(errr...the current one) hasn't produced a great cricketer of any era(except perhaps Ryan ten Dochete & Dirk Nannes-if you bend the rules)

Now soccer & field hockey are completely different.

India is known for producing many great batsmans.

    Some notable names are

Sachin Tendulkar(Has most runs in both Test and ODI.

Sunil Gavaskar(Has kept the record of most Test runs for a significant period of time)

Rahul Dravid(Among the few cricketers to cross 10,000 runs in Test)

Kapil Dev(A great all-rounder, and has kept the record of most test wickets for a significant duration)

Anil Kumble(India's best ever bowler, and is third behind Murali and Warne in terms of taking most Test wickets).

My nation is the worst at Cricket. It never produces any good cricketers. We just had that one good guy named Shame Warm, who was always taught a good lesson at the hands of the mighty Sachin Tendulkar. We have ever since lost hopes and now follow the greatest team of India.
