Cancun is in two parts. You have the town of Cancun and the Isla de Cancun or the Hotel Zone which is about 11km apart. The Hotel Zone has all your all inclusive hotels and resorts and many of your clubs and bars for night life. The town has hotels, bars and restaurants as well but no beach or ocean views. Cancun is expensive and the need to take taxis is a must to get around. My advice is to check out Playa Del Carmen just south of Cancun. Famous for its 5th Av. only one block to the beach and all walkable with 100's of shops, bars and restaurants. Stay in a hostel where you can meet people your own age from all over the world and be able to go out and explore together or to just trade travel tips.Cooking os allowed to save money and most hostels are only a few blocks to the beach. Hotels that are clean safe and have security can be as cheap as $25US dollars a night!! We rent now for only 30 a night with AC. Check out these sites for hostels or contact me directly.

September is a great month to travel in Cancun, prices are Cheap everywhere and you can move easily , and its up to you, there are a lot activities to do, i will recomend to visit Isla Mujeres, and Cancun Downtown, take the same measures you have to take in all places, don`t trust to strangers, get in touch by social networks with you friends , get caution when you take a taxi , always send somebody plate number is better than taxi number, always tell somebody by social networks about your activities, try to get pictures of peaople you know ,

Just stay on the tourist area, there are actually more americans than mexicans there.

Meet people but don't go to non populated areas. There are a lot of great clubs, beaches, and so on that you can visit and have fun.

Know what's the emergency number, or hotel phone number, and report to someone once in a while (this is nost just for Mexico, but always do it when traveling alone).
