first they will have you change into a gown. you will lay down on your side on a table. the nurse will clean your low back with some cold wet antibacterial agent. the dr will numb up the area. after that he will insert a needle into the area and get some fluid to test or give you anesthesia to numb you from your waist down. it just depends on why they are doing it. the only complication that i have seen is a headache that doesn't go away for a couple of days. if that happens they can do a blood patch. same basic procedure except they inject blood to clot the area so it doesn't leak. best thing i have found that helps is to empty your bladder before they start cause you want to stay lying down for 6-8 hours after its done. with the numbing medicine they use its really not painful. you feel a little pressure when the needle goes in and sometimes an electric type shock down one leg or the other but still not bad from a pain standpoint. good luck and let me know how you did.
