What's so wrong with being a housewife and taking care of your children?

I have asked this question to friends and they just stare at me like I said something wrong! It really irritates me that people just look at me like I'm stupid when I talk about wanting to be a housewife and home school my children instead of sending them out into the world to be taught about sex ed!!! That's mine and my hubby's (future) job to teach not someone you'll probably never see again!

So what's wrong with being a housewife?

Thank you for your answers!

Update:

I see working if you need the money but I don't want to have to work once I start having babies!

nothing at all.. When I get married and have kids I will either work from home or not work at all.. It all depends on the financial situation. Once my kids are older and able to take care of them selfs I might go back to work. But, as of right now I plan on working hard enough now that so when I do have kids I will be able to stay home.

Homeschool is a little much but what ever floats your boat.

I dont believe theres anything wrong with being a housewife so long as that is your choice. I think the reason that some women dislike even the word housewife is because it gives the image of a woman with no aspirations and that of her doing what she is expected to do by the husband. If it is your choice and you would love to stay at home with your kids then so be it because yes that can be a career. Don't be so quick to assume that people are simply thinking you're stupid though. Its simply more so that women have for decades been trying to escape the stereotype of having to become a housewife so when a woman declares she wants to be one it seems as if shes doing it because shes being told to do so, not because she actually wants to.

Plus all the tv shows of The "real" housewives, doesn't help.

I am a housewife and there is nothing wrong with it, though I don't home school. I knew kids when I was younger who were home schooled and they just weird and unsocialized. I would never do that to my boys, and they really like going to school and getting that interaction. As far as sex ed your kids don't HAVE to take it, they have to send home permission slips and you don't have to sign them. Also, unless they have no friends they will probably learn about the birds and the bees from their friends long before it comes up at home! If you want to home school that is fine, but please do your research, something like 5/10 home schooled children are VERY behind other children their age in education because they aren't being taught properly and aren't keeping up with their studies. Back to the subject lol, there is nothing wrong with being a house wife if you can afford to be one, I have been a house wife/stay at home mom for the past 6 years. I do plan on going back to work at some point, but right now I am enjoying getting to go to all of my kiddos school activities :)

The people that look at you like that are probably the ones that will go to prison for child abuse. There's nothing wrong with being a housewife and taking care of your children, just make sure it's what you want and that you're ready.

Um, nothing, if that's what you want to do with your life.

The reason people look down on it is because it women were once not allowed to choose whether or not to be a housewife, it was something forced upon you.

But if being a housewife is your thing, then whatever.

I am both a mother and a homeschool teacher, and there is nothing wrong with either. Make the decisions that are right for you and your family, and disregard anyone else's opinion (especially when the opinion is full of ignorance and stereotypes, some of which have been expressed here).

I don't see anything wrong with being a housewife as long as it's what you want.

It's every woman's choice, as it's every man's choice. You have the right to get a job, you have the right to stay at home. It is a personal decision, and you're choice.

Because some people think that you have rights now, why aren't you using them. Back in the 1950's you were almost forced to do it.

    Nothing really.

Some people think your not exercising your right as a woman.

But if your family is in need (needs money) then you should certainly get a job.
