If the universe wasn't a result of intelligent design, how did creatures know to develop ears...?
...since they had no way of knowing there were sound waves to be heard?
Thanks for your answers guys...I get how they would have developed senses gradually as they were useful...but that doesn't really answer my question - do you mean that the ability to sense soundwaves came about accidently at first in a basic way and then developed more and more?

But the sound is there, as is the light, the gravity etc. and hearing an an evolutionary adaptation to take advantage of something that exists in nature. The animals that could sense approaching sound waves in the form of vibrations did not get eaten by the predator. Eventually the ones that did not get eaten had better and better ability to detect the sound waves. As did the predators who could listen for prey scurrying about.
Think about it like an arms race.

Hearing is an important skill, and a method of channeling the sound waves make it better.
This isn't nearly has perplexing as how plants have developed in various way to protect themselves, feed, and spread seeds.

They didn't know to. You can feel sound and a lot of animals use that. The area got more specialized over time and ears developed one step at a time.
Evolution doesn't happen in any direction you want.

probably the ones that developed sensitivity to sound didn't get eaten as much. This is a big motivator.
