Recording artists of R&P: What is your setup?
For those of you who do your own recordings:
I know it will vary based on your particular needs at the time, but in general, what is your setup like, in terms of mics, preamps, software, whatever.
Got any helpful tips or secrets you're willing to share?
I run Pro Tools 9 on my Macbook Pro, through a Presonus Firestudio 26x26 interface. Monitors are Mackie MR8s. For microphones I have a Shure SM57 and 58, Beta, 52, and a pair of Rode NT5s. I also have a Mackie 1604 VLZ pro mixer, but I usually just use that for live sound or odds and ends (I used it for headphone distribution today, for example), and mix "in the box", for the most part.

Mine is just a tape player up against my amp, in a quiet room.

It depends on what you can afford. If you can purchase the Pro Tools HD bundle or just multi-tracking software, go for it. Mic placement in a room is always key. Remember your quality is everything. If you wanna a professional sounding recording, I would try to invest my money at a studio. It also depends on your music and your goals for it. (Pushing to a major label, music making for personal use, etc.) Good Luck.
