right now whenever I namedrop bands, they just look at me like I'm a nerd

nothing. it's not what you wear it's who you are. you could be cool in a burlap sack if you could play it off or have the looks. or just wear your fav band shirts or nameless shirts with jeans. you can't dress cool. it's all in attitude.

start making up names of bands, but be sure to note you only like their first album--then they sold out and got mainstream.
