Why is it people say.....................?

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." When I have had broken bones and I have had "words" spoken to be expecually by family and I believe the words hurt worse, and for longer then the broken bones..... I just don't understand how some people are stupid enough to say this.... any insight??

Update:

@ Ry I agree I have broken...and fractured...and sprainged MANY MANY MANY things..... and I'm not going to lie it hurts for a day or two but I'm still hurt over something a family member said about a year ago.... Man Family sure knows how to get you the worst don't they??? I know my family can bring out the best and worst in me... I absolutly hate allowing them to have that much control over me but man some of the things they say and do........

Because people who have any bit of self esteem know that anyone who says something hurtful is just unhappy themselves and it doesn't matter what they say.

No jk, this is just someone's clever little saying to get people to think they're bullying isn't working. If they think it's not working they might stop.

It is just something to say to taunt a bully, but as you know it isn't true.
