How do you get rid of fruit flies?

A while back, I had a banana spoil on my counter top and undoubtedly, it attracted fruit flies. Since then, we've had no rotting food, but I can't seem to get rid of them! They seem to gather around my kitchen sink. Any ideas?

A friend told me if you put out a small cup of juice, it will attract them and they'll virtually drown themselves, but I left out juice and had not one fruit fly in it! Help!

Nothing will get rid of them. I have been battling them since X-mas. A few beer bottles did me in. Now they come back for the water in the sink drain. Here is what I did and it worked, after so long of failed hippie methods I got bug spray, set down a banana so it would attract them, then sprayed, cleaned the area and repeated every 2 or so hours for a day. Then I put vinegar in a soda bottle, made a funnel so they could climb in but not out, and they died in there. The trick is to use bug spray to get rid of the majority of them, then use hippie methods to pick up the stragglers. They have a life cycle of 7 days, so if after 2 weeks of no food and water, you have to go nuke on them. There may be some food or something somewhere you can't see or get to. Also scrub the **** out of your kitchen and use a spray cleaner daily on your entire kitchen till they are gone. It takes a lot of paper towels, but it keeps the area clean.

Pour a diluted bleach solution down the sink to kill anything that might be attracting them in there.

Whenever we get fruit flies, I always put out a bowl of vinegar, water and a drop of dish soap - the flies seem to be attracted and then they drown.

Wipe down all counters and surfaces, change the trash more regularly than you normally would, keep lids on everything!

    Good luck.

Bugs and insect sprays will work. That's also my problem on my kitchen, they also invaded my kitchen cabinets.
