There is no single definition for "going green". In general it is any change in behavior that reduces a persons negative impact on the environment.
1. Yes, most of the principals for going green are the same as the people who celebrate Earth Day.
2. Yes, one aspect of going green is switching to clean and renewable energy sources, because it reduces pollution and conserves resources.
3. There is no 1 source or beginning for the green movement. It has been around in some form or another for decades. It is likely the recent use of the term green to mean environmentalism comes from the "green politics" movement of the 1970's. Although in the past few years Green has been hijacked as a marketing term to try to allow people to have choices with a lower environmental impact than conventional items, which is often contrary to green principals of minimal consumerism. If I had to pick a single publication that may have sparked the green movement it would have to be Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.

Earth Day is green only in as much as the participants themselves 'are' green and can convince others to 'go green' not just on Earth Day, but every day, every minute, of their lives:
http://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2011 , http://www.treehugger.com/htgg/how-to-go-green-ear... , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day .
For the 2nd part of your question, look around in websites like: http://www.communitysmarts.com/green-alternative-e... , http://greenenergyme.org/alternative-renewable-ene... , or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy , and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_energy (There are a multitude of others, of course.).
As to the 3rd point in your question, try reviewing some of the links from the search results: http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oG7kRA_a9OaW... , or http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source... . You can even add country names if you want to explore the development of green movements in specific countries, e.g., enter: "history of the green movement in australia".
Best of wishes for an awesome powerpoint presentation and paper! Maybe you'll want to add some videos to your PPT: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=going+... .
