Basics of Bridge Building?

So I'm entering this contest where my team must make a bridge. We don't know anything about bridge-building at all (and we will have no training, unlike those other teams). So I'm asking, what is the basics in building a truss bridge model and how can I make it withstand more than 25 kg of weight? (250 N)

    Get the structure of the bridge then calculate the loads and stresses, get your SF BM diagrams, the calculate for strains fatique and fracture, calculate natural frequencies, modes of failures and point of resonance, and may be then do a simulation in ansys or nastran.
