Heartworm meds for dogs?

My vet told me if a dog has heartworms and you give them heartguard, the dog will die. like literally just fall over dead. Is this true? I've done some research and have found if a dog has heartworms and they are given heartworm meds it will only kill the younger worms but it never said it would harm the dog. have you ever heard of this happening? FYI my dogs don't have heartworms I'm just curious if this is true.

Heartguard is a preventative (my dog is on it) but the medicine he is talking about is a more potent to kill the heartworms in the dog and he could die frim it but the dog will be at the clinic under the vets care as he will be very sick. But it the risk is also more according to how severe the heartworm disease is. The milder the infestation the less likely your dog is to die.

If you are so sure your vet gave you such inaccurate information, go to another vet for a second opinion. Get a copy of the diagnosis and his slides so you dont have to pay for them to draw blood again. If your vet refuses to give you the slides then kick his backside to the curb, as a good vet will not mind you geting a second opinion, and get another vet.

I have a feeling you may have simply misunderstood what he really meant.

Back in the day (years ago!) we used to give dogs a medicine called DEC. If DEC was given to a dog with heartworm microlfilaria the dog could have an acute allergic reaction and die. That is no longer the case but many vets still recommend testing before selling heartgard.

Heartgard is the safest method of slow heartworm treatment, and you are right that it can be given to heartworm positive dogs; it kills only the microfilaria and the adults die off naturally.

Instead of buying heartgard, which is an overpriced ivermectin, you can buy the same chemical at your feed store for about 10 dollars a year. I have included the link below.

If I were you I would look for a younger vet that would give you more up to the date information. If you dont feel like doing that keep coming back and accept nothing without questioning the veracity.
