How long should i allow my dogs to be on a treadmill?

Since were expecting a harsh winter and two of my dogs have short thin coats and quite a bit of energy, I got a treadmill for them to jog on. My pit bull just loves it and acts like he wants to be on it all the time. My jack Russell also likes it but she gets bored with it after a few minutes. At a steady jogging pace how long should I let them be on it? I started out with just 5 minute sessions once a day, then moved up to a 10 minute session for about a week and now my pit bull is up to 15 minutes, but acts like he could go on for much longer. I put my jack Russell on for about 13 minutes at a time because she gets bored with it. Also, just so you all know.. I still take them on a daily walk and play fetch with them all the time but I work during the day a lot so I don't take them on a very long walk because it gets dark early.

  • 15-20 minutes for your Pittie should be long enough. Your JR might be just fine going until she gets bored with it.

A little outside time with some boots or something on their feet might help as well. Just make sure you check their pads for any excessive dryness, cracking or sores. If there is any cracking or sores present, Espree sells something called Paw Balm, but unless you live near a Petco, I don't know who else might carry it. Epsom salt baths once a day help as well.

I know this might be a lot to read, but Kong balls can help to redirect their energy as well. My Pit's absolutely love it when I stuff their Kong's with wet dog food, maybe mix in some regular treats, stick a rawhide through the middle, then freeze it overnight. They don't pay any attention to anything else besides that kong. The only other time the house is that quiet is when they're sleeping.

    I would say 15-20 minutes

Until they get tired. You'd let them run out side as long as they want, same goes for the treadmill.

Id say as long as they want... When they seem to be getting tired or bored let them off

    Honestly, they need outside exercise.

Get them little all weather boots and a jacket if you are concerned.

Whatever you think they can handle :) make sure you take breaks and give them water.
