Need help with math problem?

Mr. Riley recently went on a shopping trip. Before he left home, he set is trip odometer to 0. When he arrived at the nearest town, Near Town, he noticed that the trip odometer registered 45 miles. He traveled on to his destination, which was Big Town, stopped there for a while to shop, and then returned home. On the way back, he noticed as he passed through Near Town that the trip odometer showed 127 miles.

a. What was the mileage when he returned home?

b. How far is Big Town from Near Town?

Number one tip with word problems: take out all the important details and ignore the rest.

We know the trip starts at 0, so NT is 45 mi from your starting point. He went from NT to BT and back, totalling now 127 mi. That was both ways. So both ways there and back from BT is 127 mi - 45 mi, because we want what the distance from NT is to BT. That is 82 mi. But he did this twice, so 82 / 2 is 41 mi, which is the distance from NT to BT. We also know that the trip was 127 mi + the distance from NT to the start, which we know is 45mi. So 127 + 45 is 172 mi.

So total trip is 127 mi, and from NT to BT is 41 mi.

    a) To get this answer you add 45 miles (distance from home to near town) to 127 miles (distance from home to big town, back to near town) and you get 172 miles.

    b) To get this answer you subtract 45 from 127, which will get you the distance between Near Town and Big town x2. So, you divide this number by 2 and you get 41 miles.

    45 + 127 = 172 miles

    127 - 45 = 82 miles
