Facebook: believe it's built on LAMP?

That is the result of a search. As I'm not a computer pro, wondering from someone who IS knowledgeable, if that is the best way to build a social networking site that is going to be very large? Are there better choices now. If so, what and why is it better? Good sites to go to find useful information on creating/building/maintaining social networking sites?

Good info on the pros and cons of Facebook from the creators--what would they do differently now?

Also not a Net pro, but this article tells you some useful things about Facebook and LAMP:

You can hire folks who do know these things, but it won't be cheap: hosting site, security provisions, legal protection also are all cost factors though I don't know how much.

You said LARGE social networking which rules out some of the other ways to build smaller ones--things like Ning allows for social networking without your having to be a coder, but it's not meant to be large (assuming you're talking more to the Facebook side of the spectrum when you said very large and not a thousand users).
