Is it okay to run freezers off an extension cord?

If the cord is heavy enough and the run isn't too long. I have a large upright in the garage I have ran over 20 years now (2nd freezer during that time) with a 25 ft 12 gauge cord. Never had any problem.

Not a good idea as the cord may not be able to handle the load. Good way to start a fire.
